The chemicals become used when in contact with the film if not agitated - therefore they work slower so giving lighter areas which print darker - the sprocket holes use up less of the active ingredients so therefore chemicals below the sprocket holes are slightly more active - so you get this pattern as the chemicals slowly move down the film.
That does seem plausible and fits the evidence,

Check for the correct temperature of the fixer, too - that sometimes happen when it's too cold (below 20 deg C in my case).
