Aspect ratio problems with D3

After doing a lot of maths and stuff I've realised that the sensor on my D3 doesn't quite conform to the 3:2 ratio of 35mm film whereas the sensor on my girlfriends 5dmk1 does.

This means that when I try and resize images to photographic sizes like 9x6 I end up with 9x5.989 wheras doing the same thing to a 5d file gives me a tidy, exact 9x6.

Not worth worrying about really, just slightly annoying.

Well, it was worth worrying about when I thought part of my sensor had died or something!

That's because the D3 doesn't have a full frame sensor, it has Nikon's "FX" one, which is ever so slightly smaller.

Strange.
It's such a small difference that it won't make the slightest difference quality wise but seems strange they didn't just make it truly full frame.
Wonder if the Sony 'full frame' camera is the same then as supposedly the sensor in the D3 is made by Sony.

No idea what the reasoning was, for the record a full frame sensor is 36x24mm and the Nikon FX format is 36x23.9mm

After doing a little maths (OK, using a calculator to do it for me!), I see that the ratio isn't exactly 1:1.5 in my D700 (same sensor as the D3 IIRC) but is pretty close - 1:1.502824858757062. This possibly matters less in the D700 due to the 95% viewfinder compared to the 100% VF in the D3 which allows a little cropping and still keeps everything seen through the VF. The sensor size is 36mm x 23.9mm, pretty close to the actual measurements of a 35mm camera's mask (measured in an OM10), so counts as FF IMO.

Yeah, the little 36x24 in the top lcd when you select full sensor mode is confusing but I guess 36x23.9 wouldn't fit in the window!

Ah ok, my mistake.
According to this they have lopped the 0.1mm off the length and added it onto the height on the D3x.

All you need to do now is explain to your girlfriend that size isn't everything

That's annoying, because the shortfall is on the short side of the sensor, using the D3's built in 5:4 crop doesn't render a neatly resizeable image either.
It will on the D3x though.
