Hi all.

Looking for some advice on attracting birds into my garden, i have had 3 feeders up for months now and not so much as a single bird.

My garden is very bare, no trees, shrubs ect, there is a field and huge hedgerows around the garden and hundreds of birds but i am having no luck enticing them in.

I have tried fatballs, mealworms, waxworms and normal seed.

Here are some on next doors roof, sorry about the pic, it was taken with the 18-55mm

Plant some trees, shrubs etc! They don't have to be planted direct into the garden, large containers should be fine for smaller trees and shrubs. Birds like to be able to get to cover FAST so they can escape from sparrowhawks, peregrines and cats (as well as other predators).

If you place the feeding station closer to the existing hedgerows, you might get them to start visiting your feeders, then it may just be a case of setting up a hide of sorts so you can get some pictures.

Hi Nod, thanks for the reply.

I will get some trees planted and see if that helps.

I have feeders as close to the trees and hedges as possiable, and have a little shed at the top of the garden i am using as a hide.

That photo looks like a scene from Hitchocks 'Birds'!
Why don't you show us a photo of your feeders in relation to the house/garden etc.
In general with new feeders, once one bird finds them, it doesn't take long before the others follow.

Keith.

bird feeders with rohypnol, wait until they fall asleep and double sided sticky tape them where you like.

seriously though, ditto what Nod said, and dont forget autumn is time of plenty for birds in terms of natural food, but don't give up, once winter really sets in and the berries/fruit/insects are much more scarce they will be looking for any additional food they can find, including yours.

Buy lots of different food to attract birds to the garden (suet bars, peanuts, fat balls and sunflower hearts etc), the more food you have in the garden, the more, different birds you're get. When I started putting food out, it took the birds (apart from the robin, he comes every day lol) a few months to realise the food was there.

Plants, bushes etc are the key to attracting birds...they need cover! :)

Here is a good watch courtesy of BBC IPlayer

Thanks for all the replys, i will be picking up some small trees during the week and i will get some more foods.

Managed to get the seagulls in the garden today so hopefully the other birds will show some interest..

A pic of the garden would probably help a lot. Generally speaking birds are always wary of how vunerable they are to ground and aerial predators when they're feeding, so they like to have nearby cover they can dive into.

Think about how you'd feel if you were their size feeding on the ground or in the open, and you were thinking about cats and Sparrow Hawks, and you get the general idea. :D

I will get some pics up tommorow.

My garden is just grass at the moment with fences on all sides.

Shoot them down.
That will show them.
