I have sensor cleaning on all the time, so cleans every time I switch my Canon 500D off. Is this wise or is there any downside to doing this? I can understand using a bit of battery power, but any other negative aspects?

No mate, don't worry about it, I have it do this on my 450D.

It's not perfect, so don't expect a completely spotless sensor over time, but anything that helps shake any specks of the sensor has to be a good thing.

Agree. Leave it on. Probably uses less power than previewing an image on the LCD
