I think you simply meter without the filter attached, then multiply the shutter speed by roughly a 1000? Thats what it looks like you do according to my iphone app?

Check what your exposure increments are set at. You know they can be set at 1/2s or 1/3rds so that when you turn the main dial, your exposure will adjust accordingly.

Therefore if set at 1/2s, 20 clicks/rotations on the main dial will be 10 stops.

That's how I do it - count the clicks. It never changes, and you've got to do it anyway!

Check the exact exposure factor for your filter though, as they often vary a bit from marked. The B+W 110 I had was about 10.5 stops.
