Hi all, my niece will be having her baby today, and it will be a great opportunity for me to TRY !, and get some shots when they are home in a couple of days. I have noticed a lot of photos are taken with a 50mm f1.8 which i dont own, i have a 18-70mm f3.5-4.5 which i will try and use, when it comes to flash is this a no,no, now i dont mean full on flash, but can it be used in a more subtle way, bounced, diffused etc or is it better to try and use whatever natural light there is? Thanks

imo it's best to use natural light when possible, i never use flash for new borns as it would most likely scare them or even worse wake them up lol

I took some recent shots of a new born indoors with a 70-300 4-5.6 vr

Bare in mind Baby photo imo look great in black and white so for that reason don't be affraid to up the iso as a bit of grain looks good in B&W

definately will be looking at the B&W aspect, thanks danny.

I just wrote a blog post on shooting babies, I used a kit lens for my son and got some great shots - try use as much natural light as you can.

It's all about being creative, using what you have and most importantly choose your angel right.

Remember in a way a baby is the best subject, it's so natural - no fake smile or awkward pose - it doesn't know how.

also Danny made a good point, black and white does look good with some grain, it can add to the photo so don't be afraid of cranking up the ISO speed - but make it black and white in post production don't let the camera do that.

i will be looking at that blog post grant, and like i have said to danny will be looking at B&W, thank you.

Be sure to post some up here, I'd love to see your first try.

just to say niece has had a little girl, 9.21, and 6lb 9oz

cheers chaps., camera, charged, flash (just in case) charged, spare batteries, charged, cf cards, formatted and fresh, check, lets do it !!!!, lol

it can also give some nice effects to ramp up the iso to 1600+ as this is something i like to do
