Backing Up

I've not posted any shots for a week or so now due to picking up a particularly nasty trojan. My #1 pc is now on the other side of the room awaiting my brother-in-laws skilled hands in the hope he can salvage all my files. I've not backed anything up since I took up photography a few months ago. Gulp.

I've learnt my lesson and now intend to have a separate hard drive installed specifically for files so if anything goes wrong again only the software drive will be affected.

Back up people!

Might I suggest backing up to at least one other HDD, preferably an external one and making an optical copy too - CD or DVD (or maybe a couple). Keep a copy off site - maybe a parent's house or at work - just in case everything at home goes up in smoke or gets nicked.

I may be paranoid BUT I still have all my pictures.

What happens if the drive with the files fails though? You really need to backup your photos somewhere else rather than just having them on a separate hard drive from your programs.

A friend of mine is in a similar situation. I am going to have to format her hard drive and reinstall XP, however, I will be able to backup all her photos first.

I'd suggest the same to you as I am to her. make to backups, one to a portable/External harddrive and the second to an online system.

After some browsing I found http://www.adrive.com/ they give you 50GB of free secure space, they also have more advanced options to that you can pay for :)

Although, even with a trojan, you should still be able to boot it and back up the files.

Thinking about this further I think you're right. I'm going to get an external drive instead as well as keeping them safe online. I didn't realise how cheap external drives have become since I looked at them last a few years ago.

The trojan screwed me properly. Tried many simple things, but ended up with BWOD and even a repair install ddin't work. Even going in through recovery console and extracting the files has been tough, hence handing it over to the expert!

Thanks for that link :)

Try booting your machine with a Linux Live CD or a BartPE disk. You should be able to access your files on your hard drive and shift them to a USB flash disk or hard drive.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm now leaving it well alone. Scott can check it out this weekend, so I'd rather wait, TBH.

Actually, looking into the BartPE disk I think I might have a go. Thank you :)

buy a caddy and relax
i have two...one for the laptop and one on mains power which runs 7200 rpm hard drives
all my shots are on the big one and some on the smaller one...

good luck getting that monster off your pc

Get yourself a ps3!!
You can put all your photos on there as well as your pc, so acts like a backup solution.
Hooked up to the t.v I find I look at my photos a lot more as they are so easy to view and they are on the big screen!!

Don't keep all your back-ups in one location. I'm sure you can think of reasons why...

I'm not a gamer, mate. Oh, and we don't have a tv in the house. ;)
