Backup cards for Nikon D7000

I am about to go away for a week with the camera in tow, I am constantly thinking how I can backup my photos just incase, better to be safe than sorry.

I have invested in some quick cards for my D7000. I am now thinking of investing in some more cards to take advantage of the twin sd slot on the camera to back everything up. This will basically be after I have finished shooting and not during.

Can I just get bog standard cards for this function to save a bit of money?

If you can think of any negative to backing up using the twin slots please also let me know

I use Transcend 16gb class 10 cards that I got off amazon - think they were about £11 each and seem to work fine. Think they're about 30mbps, so average speed. The buffer on the D7000 requires really, really fast cards when you're rattling off a million-and-one shots in a go, but for regular shooting they're fine. Think I'm getting something like 580 raw files (12-bit) on one of those cards and about two hours of HD video. Put this way, I've not filled one up on a shoot yet....

You can tell the camera to do a number of things with the second slots - creating a second copy on that card, sending all video to that card or putting JPEGs on one card and raw files on the other. I set mine to record raw files to No1 card and video to No2 card.

I've numbered my cards so I know that if they're taken out opt the body, they go back into the correct slot so I'm not mixing video and image files and getting confused when it comes to download :)

Get class 10 cards and shoot how you like.

I use RAW in card 1 and Jpegs in 2.

The SD is as safe as you can get for storage and they are pretty cheap £/gb so just get plenty.

Sorry, maybe I wasn't clear enough above. For shooting I have the fast cards as mentioned above, no problems there.

What I want to do is purchase some more cards solely for backing up all photos taken during the day. With this in mind can I just get the cheaper ones. This will be instead of taking a laptop etc to download the photos.

Hope this makes more sense:thinking:

Like said, the Transcend ones seem to be cheap, spacious, have a decent write speed and it's a fairly big brand. A tenner for 16GB of space isn't much in reality...

EDIT: not sure if you can back up after the event via the second SD slot. I think you have to tell the camera what you want to do with the second slot - not sure what the options are for saving a main version of a .NEF or JPEG to No1 card, and saving a copy of the same image format to the 2nd card....

EDIT: I just read the manual (p89) and you can select 'BACKUP' so whatever you take is backed up as you shoot to the second card. It doesn't mention about file formats so I assume that you can shoot a .NEF file and it'll record that same .NEF to the back up card :)
