All taken the other afternoon from around 3 p.m. -sunset.

As Bamburgh Castle has been shot by everyone and their dog, I tried to get a slightly different take on this photographic icon-hence the use of a 10 stop ND filter.

All with canon 1Ds MKII, 24mm F1.4L or 50mm F1.4 lens, 30secs-2minute exposures, mostly at F22, ISO100.

Nice set. Love 4 and 5. Think number 7 is overly red, but might be the light in my room at the mo.

It is overly red :), taken just before sunset, the effect of the 10stop ND kind of 'builds up ' colours over the long exposure, resulting in sometimes fairly intense colours.

All look very nice mate . But no2 I find very very nice . The castle is prominent in the shot but not over powering " i know this sounds carp but its the only way i can explain myself"

also no 7 is very nice

Love number 5, the path leading you into the rest of the picture is excellent. Nice shots !!

I know exactly what you mean, I noticed that most shots I'd seen of the castle, either the castle was slap bang in the middle of the frame-therefore totally dominating, or either the castle ends up being an insignificant dot in the distance, playing second fiddle to a glorious sunrise/sunset.

outstanding set les - you have produced excellent examples of using that filter.

All very nice, I'd be happy with any of those. I really must get one of those 10 stoppers, I've been meaning to get on for a while and never bought one, but these have made me put it back on the top of the 'kit list' :)

A very nice set of images. I like the long exposure look. Is this with a B+W 10 stop? Was there much of a colour cast with it? I have been using the hitech 10 stop but sometimes it can give a bit of a cast which can be a bit of a pain to correct.

Yes, it is the B+W 10 stop, both in 58mm (for 50mm lens) and 77mm (for 24mm lens), and gives a good neutral result.

Les ...not seen you posting pics for a while but an excellent set to show your still on here. (y) #1,#2 & #3 are my faves but although I take on board your explanation of #7 but for me the colours are just too intense and this makes it seem false. It's only MHO so nothing for you to worry about.

Thanks Paul, I've not posted anything recently as I'd nowt to post :)

As with most things, this photography malarkey has it's peaks and troughs, so seemed to go through a barren spell for a while, hopefully it all came good on my trip to Bamburgh, with these images and an exciting RAF cliff rescue-got my mojo back :)

IT certainly did come good from those pics above ..... I know what you mean I am having difficulty being inspried with my local scenery and lack of funds for new kit isn't helping as some other techniques I would like to try are out of my reach at the moment.

Really impressive Les. #1 is my pick. Love the tussock in the foreground.

Seems like every second TPer has a 10 stop in their kit now but a fine example of how it can be used to good effect.

:help:I know I should know but I dont think I do ...... so .... What is a 10 stop filter? I have an ND8 0.9 Cokin filter, how does this compare?

A cokin ND8 (0.9) only prevents stops 3 stops of light entering the lens, as the name suggests, a ND 10 prevents 10 stops of light entering, a list from wikipedia gives a comparison

Great set, Les, demonstrating excellent composition, understanding of light and application of technique. Hope it wasn't you that had to be rescued from the cliff by the RAF!

A cracking set Les ...

Hard to pick a favorite ... So I won't ... :D

You may have just convinced me to take my ND to Skomer now. Expect lots of questions while we are there.

Great set, though I'm not too sure about #7.
#1 really stands out for me. Terrific atmosphere.

I've only been to Bamburgh once and that was a year before I got into this photography lark.
Boy, do these pictures make me want to go back there!!!!!.

Good set of shots Les, the 10stop filter certainly gives more daytime options, might even produce interesting shots from those lifeless lighting days we have now and again...think I'll be making a purchase very soon

Wow Les these are exceptional, the castle is not far from me, but these are much better than what the human eye sees :D.
Number 3 colour and mono 6 for me(y)

very cool set. I know the last one is 'very' red but then appreciate its the last few rays of sun. and the 10 stop does have a tendency to be warmer that not. of the others I think the first black and white works the best, foreground and clouds. good stuff

Top shots and processing Les.
1,3 & 5 if I'm forced to pick.
Must have a go with filters soon - Cheers !

I think that no. 3 is my fave. The rocks look really ethereal.

Good set, this kind of stuff really appeals to me and makes me want to work harder to achieve results like these.

It's worth having one in your bag, it certainly gives another dimension, and I think you will quickly get a 'feel' for when to use it.

The biggest chew is the messing about, filter off-compose- manual focus-filter on-estimate exposure-adjust exposure-filter off........
