Banding ?

Yes
Took this photo of my little girl the other day and I have noticed vertical lines running down the image only on the carpet and most noticeable in the lower left .

The carpet is plain and has no patterns so I am confused to why this has happened – any ideas.

Photo info – D300 and 50mm f1.4 @ f2 , 1/100, iso 400 natural light and taken in raw.

Thanks
Julian

That is weird if the carpet is plain! Perhaps it is just an optical illusion type thing with the bokeh?

Those eyes really stand out!

my guess is that even though there is no pattern to the carpet
the tufts will still be in lines
take another & focus on the carpet
you may be surprised

It does appear more noticable as it gets closer to being in foucs, which to me would suggest it's a pattern in the carpet, especially seeing as it's not evident anywhere else.

Carpets are weaved together & i bet thats what you are seeing.:)

Great little face though.

That's almost certainly the carpet - the lines are converging, and there's absolutely no evidence of banding on the subject.

Take a similar picture with no subject, and then take one from 90 degress, see what you see....

You could be right chaps, looking closer at the carpet that is the way the pile goes so its probably enhanced by the boken effect
