Are 3rd party batteries exactly the same as Canon ones?

I'm after additional batteries for my 40D but remember reading somewhere that the canon battery has an element of intelligence built in

Can anyone recommend a fully compatible battery?
 
Some of them certainly do but im not sure which. 7D is certainly one of them.
Most dont however..and aftermarket ones are perfectly acceptable. I've only ever bought 3rd party ones for mine (400D, 500D, 5D1). Im pretty sure the 40D batteries aint so clever :)

40D/50D/5D all have the same batteries and they are very basic, no intelligence. You can normally get 2 for less than a tenner on ebay and I've never had problems with any. They also tend to last longer and the only ones I've ever had stop holding their charge are the Canon ones
 
Some batteries might be ok, but I have had a bad experience with mine.
I purchased a battery grip from a UK seller. It came with two chipped batteries.
I have managed to use the batteries twice, for a couple of shots. Now one of them won't even charge.

Luckily I purchased for the grip, which is still working at the moment, but I am still a little disappointed that I no longer have a backup.
