Battery / Mains problem with my macbook pro

I've just noticed that I've got a problem with my MacBook. Ever since I bought it I've always run it off the mains supply until recently where I've had to take it out with me. I notice that after turning off the mains and running it on battery the power just cuts out after a couple of minutes despite the battery lights on the back showing full power. It doesn't even do a proper shut down, it just turns itself off like it's suffered a power cut.

Has anyone come across this issue before?
 
Sounds like the battery needs calibrating. You often see laptop batteries reporting full power and then dying instantly when they've been used on mains for the majority of their life. Effectively they're only reporting what they think is true - it's just that they think 'full power' equates to about 5 seconds of real world usage.

Have you tried this?
 
How old is it? The battery performance will suffer if just used on mains power. With all my Windows laptops, I've always taken the battery out if not using it away from the mains...as to not damage the battery. Got a Macbook now, but I use it away from the mains most and the battery still works...so not sure if they both suffer!
 
I took mine into the local Apple store, they checked the serial, said it was a faulty batch and swapped it for a new one. Worth a try :D
 
How many re-charge cycles has the battery been through? You can check this by clicking on the APPLE logo and then about this mac then click on more info click on Power. You can now look down the list for Cycle count.

If the count is UNDER 300 then Apple will replace your battery FREE no matter how old it is, if it is more they will not.

Is that on any age laptop?
 
I took my daughter's macbook back a couple of months ago despite it being 18 months old. They said that the battery is a disposable item but that it should last a certain amount of times hers was at 259 and their limit was set at 300. The warranty is 1 year so clearly hers was 50% outside of that. All I can say is that they replaced hers for free without any problem whatsoever. It IS down to the cycle count though. My Macbook pro is on 359 cycles at 10 months so if it packed up even though I have a 3 year warranty they wouldn't replace it.

I have done a few tips on the battery and I would suggest reading them.

YOU MUST NEVER LEAVE A L-ION BATTERY FLAT EVER......

Always keep them 50% charged or more, if they run down to 10% and shut down then fine as long as they are not kept like that. Put it on charge even if you are not using it. Read the tip.....
