Hi folks,

new to this forum (only discovered it 5 minutes ago), been interested in Photography for a good while now, studied it at college as part of another course but wasnt able to pursue it further due to time contraints, i mess around taking pictures with point and shoot (although id hardly call them basic) cameras and get some nice results but would like to pick up a decent new or 2nd hand DSLR, which would be a great starter camera, good enough to inspire me to pursue photography but not gonna cost me big money

i dont have a budget as such, but id be reluctant to spend much over £200 at the moment, maybe in a year or so time id be willing to spend a bit more to progress with this interest.

all help would be greatly appreciated.

regards
andy

If you can manage a little more you could possibly get a Nikon D40/D40x as there are a few of them about with a kit lens.

£200 is pushing it, although there are some second hand bargains out there. Check out the olympus E-420. I've seen kits going (camera+lens) for around £250 for example http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/OLYMPUS-E-420-14mm-42mm-f3-5-f5-6-ZUIKO-ZOOM_W0QQitemZ140310853849QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CamerasPhoto_DigitalCameras_DigitalCameras_JN?hash=item140310853849&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2|65%3A7|39%3A1|240%3A1318

The attractiveness of olympus is that even their cheap lenses seem to be pretty good.

I'm selling a 450d canon, but its double your budget :S

my mate has just bought an e-420 and loves it, though I would advise playing with one first they're TINY and have no sticky outy side bit which imho is just wrong :D

I think I just saw another thread in which someone posted a link to eBay of a Canon 350D + lens which closed at £207 or so.

For not much over £200 you could get a sony alpha 200, feature packed for the money, with steady shot in the body, so no need to have IS lenses!!

Sound advice :)

Hi Andy,
I have a D40 which I was putting up on ebay this week. Can't advertise it on the classifieds here as I don't have enough posts yet. :(

Ya, a new Nikon D40 with kit lens can be found for a few £s under £250 and so hopefully you would be able to find one secondhand around the £200 budget you have set out.

You can also pick up Canon 400D's for that price but you will have to add a little more for the lens

Just bought myself one of these, £250 on amazon and so far no issues and seems great!

Also if funds are tight you can use second hand Konica/Minolta lenses as they just bolt straight on.

I had an E-420 but ditched it in favour of a D40. The range and availability of accessories for the E420 is disappointing and the price of glass is fairly high, and the choice is limited. The sensor is tiny compared to the D40, so the drop in MP from the E420 to D40 is more than made up for.

If I had to do it all over again, I'd have gone for a D40 in the first place.

thanks folks,

great advice from everyone, i realise i restricted myself with 200 quid as my budget, but i can stretch to a little more, i quite like the sony alpha 200, it was one that had caught my eye before i posted this, and it bang on for what im after at the moment.

ill keep an eye on the classifieds and hopefully ill pick up a nice camera soon, and i daresay ill be using this place again after the response from this post

cheers

andy

If you can stretch it to the £245 for the A200 new at Amazon with the 18-70mm kit lens then I think you would be quite happy. The 18-70mm will give you quite a bit of range to play around with at first until you decided when/if you need another lens. It looks to be a robust, feature-filled camera for the price and seems to have a lot of happy owners. 2 year warranty when buying new doesn't hurt either.

I'd go with the classifieds on this forum. You will get better value for money and wont feel so bad when you upgrade.
:)
