How do you define best? What are you looking for?

I use and rate highly the LaCie Rugged external hard drives (500GB USB & FW flavour), they do a 1TB version.

Had a 500G Toshiba external drive that failed after about 18 months. Could probably have argued that it should be still be covered (outside 12-month warranty) but didn't (used to back up confidential client data, so not prepared to send it back).

Didn't replace it with a Tosh - never again. Bought a Freecome network drive.
 
I have a 1tb seagate with the FW800 connection, which is great.
I also have the 500gb WD mybook (again with fw800) and it's a workhorse.
I'd recommend either.

Have had three WD Mybooks for several years now and so far they've been faultless..
