Best all purpose lens

[Abhi_UK]

Hi
For my new Nikon D5100 I’m looking for an all purpose lens. My budget is around £300 ($500 approx). Could you please suggest me some good lenses?
Criteria
Should have good Wide angle coverage
Should have fair amount of teleport
It should be a good portrait (most of the time I’ll be using it for taking portrait pics)
The performance should be very good (can afford to spend little bit extra for this)
Most importantly it should make the user happy.

The lenses in my mind are
Nikon 18-105mm AF-S, VR
Sigma 18-125mm HSM
Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 SP XR Di Nikon Fit with Motor

I’m not sure about their performance. So I need your opinion regarding the above and any other lenses. End of the day I want to buy the best one that fits my budget,

There is also the Nikon 16-85mm which would give you more wide angle shots.

Nikon 18-200mm VR? Considerably more than £300 new, of course, but you ought to be able to pick up a decent used one for that sort of money.

I use the 18-105 vr, its a great lens.

I have one d90 with this and one with a 50mm.
