I have looked online and there seems to be all sorts.
Free would be ideal

I use Kashflow. https://www.kashflow.com/

Starts at £9+vat/month but realistically you're looking at £19+vat/month unless you send less than 10 invoices a month.

It's as simple as accounting can be.

Submits VAT returns and all that stuff.

Just a thought, if you bank with NatWest I’m pretty sure they offer free accounting software. I’ve never tried it so no idea what it’s like.
