Wondering which magazine or book is the best to get for a total newbie like myself.
eg not to technical easy to understand starts with basics etc etc.
Thanks Craig

Have a look at Digital Photo magazine. It's biased towards the post processing side of digital photography but does carry some useful camera based articles too. It also has a cover disk packed with Photoshop tutorials :)

Thanks ill try and pick it up later today and give it a look. Any other ideas for a begginers book or magazine would be appreciated.
Thanks

Probably more useful and specific info on here than any book !

Just do a search, if you cant find what you are looking for - just ask for :help:

Response times on this forum are amazingly quick too

EDIT.......

The thing with Mag subscriptions is.... you will find they just repeat themselves after a few months. I had a 6mth subscription from my kids for fathers day. Within the 6mth I had many repeat articles (probably rewriten and different pics but, essentially the same)

I was just about to type the same sort of answer Craig.

Unless it's a gift for someone else, I'd be inclined to save your money and use TP. It's far more targetted to a newbie's needs than a mag that will skim over many subjects at varying levels of technicality. You can search with pretty much pin-point accuracy for your chosen subject and sit at your leisure filling your brain with useful matter

With a magazine you have to read what THEY want you to learn and quite often you don't find that out until you've handed over your cash and are sat on the bus/train/plane reading it.

Yeah, but you cant beat actually holding something and turning the pages.

I spend way too much time glued to a laptop screen - all day and most evenings, and its nice to take in information in a different way.

I will say that it is true though. The articles can be found on line, in more detail and more direct to your camera....

I support quite a few magazines, as I feel if I dont, there wont be many in a few years.

Thanks for all replies will invest in some magazine and a book SLR Digital for Dummies if such a thing exists and will keep viewing on here.
Thanks Craig

I get quite a few magazines, mostly as I spend a lot of time sitting in a van..

Anyway, out of the current crop I`d say it does depend on what you want to brush up on. Digital Photo as mentioned spends alot of time on the processing side. Photography Monthly it has to be said, isn`t as good as it used to be. Practical Photography is quite a good one, good tips and pointers. I`m a subscriber to DSLR User, that`s undergone a revamp last month, out of the current batch that`s my favourite one.

Go in have a flick through what`s on the shelf, see what you like. The only thing with all these mags is that they tend to cover the same material as each other. Some good books as well as the info available on here goes an awful long way too.

The digital photography book by Scott Kelby. Easy to understand and not too technical. Its great to refer back to every now and then if you get stuck on something. Definitely worth purchasing.

i get digital photo and Practical Photography so when she moans i been on the pc 2 long i got something to read in bed, as she would really moan if i had TP on the laptop in bed.

There's one 100% essential book you need to get:

Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson

Very well written and I found it a great help

Must admit I don't subscribe to magazines anymore, once you've been through a 12month cycle they just seem to repeat the same sort of tips/articles
