Any advice on the basic
Must have modifiers for portait and general photography ?
Also who currently makes the "best" umbrellas and softboxes ?
I need to renew my old gear so any advice appreciated
Currently using Elinchrom lights and a mix of theirs lastolite and calumet modifiers.

Thanks

I'm very happy with all the Lencarta gear i've bought. Great value for money and top quality in my opinion.

A good portrait is like a poem to the person you photograph.
So, the question is as relevant as to ask what pencil or pen
is a "must have" to write poetry!

I have seen great portraits done with all kinds of modifiers. And,

although I own and work daily with the many tools in my arsenal,
I still don't think there is such a thing as a "must have" other than
the necessary creativity to write a poem… whatever pen is used.

Very poetic answer. Makes so much sense.

Notwithstanding the excellent post from Kodiak.

I think softbox build quality and ease of erection can make a difference to your wellbeing, but that varies with whether you have a permanent studio.

Umbrellas are a weakness by design, so I consider them a consumable, buy cheap and replace as necessary. Because even the expensive ones will wear or break.

Things I use most often..

7" reflector & v flat (white on one side, black on the other) - it'll kind of do the job of a jumbo softbox but has numerous other uses
7" reflector & grids - there's no real substitute when it comes to accent lights
Gridded stripboxes - Highly versatile but not so big as to be unwieldy
120cm Lencarta octa with just the inner diffuser - good for wide but directional light
60cm octa - great for toplighting from a boom.
