Best Nikon mid zoom?

Hi

I'm looking at getting a mid zoom for D810 but would prefer not to get a f2.8 due to size and weight as mostly backpacking.

I've got the 16-35mm vr lens, I see Nikon do a 24-85mm lens, any hands on experience of this combo? Is their any alternatives?

24~70 mm ƒ2,8 for sure!
 
24-120 f/4 is my choice.
 
Will check out 24-120 vr
Always in past had mid zoom f2.8 versions, but weight really is drawing me away from them but still want same quality, hope that's no a impossible wish
 
The 24-70 f/2.8 might JUST have the edge in IQ terms at the short end and can obviously do more in the way of shallow DoF effects but at the longer end, it's less clear (and the extra 50mm is handy too!)

I use the 24-85mm VR and its superb

Only one who doesn't have it can make such a statement.
I think it's best Gary if you ask those who have it!
 
If weight is important then the 24-85VR is the one. Not quite as 'good' as the 24-70 but not far off and a hell of a sight smaller and lighter.

FWIW I use both on a D750.

This is my thinking also. I see a lot of 24-120 users here, optically their seems no difference from what I've seen on reveiws but nearly twice as heavy.

Re f2.8 if the impossible happened and they become half their weight I'll jump at one
 
I have also the 24-70mm f2.8 Nikon lens except without VR the ealier version. I read somewhere it is slightly better than the VR version and about £400 cheaper


Non vr version weight 900g or 31.7 oz === price £1119
vr version 1068g or 38.4 oz === price £1599

Vr version is not only heavier but wider and longer as well

The 28-85vr and the 24-120 are both decent lenses they are not much good at f/2.8 though ;)

Have never found the weight of a small lens like the Nikon 24-70 f/2.8 to be an issue I guess it depends on what you are comparing it with.

And the abomination of a hood, whats that all about, its like my 70-200mm f/2.8 hood

Anyone looking for a decent option should take a look at some of anibaps higs res images on the D750 thread taken with the £200 24-85mm VR

I have no problem with gear weight
I have no problem with gear stability (I never used VR) and
I have no problem with gear cost…

The only 2 lenses I have that are not ƒ2.8 or better are both
over the 400 mm focal length mark and ƒ4.

So, to the question: Best Nikon mid zoom?

My answer: 24~70 mm ƒ2,8 for sure!

Idont understand Kodiak, NOT ONCE ANYWHERE have i said the 24-85mm VR is the best mid range zoom, hell i haven't even said its any better or worse than the over priced, overweight ,over rated 24-70mm f/2.8

I did say i use the 24-85mm and its superb, i DID NOT say it was the best, the OP asked for opinions on the 24-85mm VR which i gave, do try reading before replying good man.

This is interesting - I'd seen a bad review of the 24-120 on Ken Rockwell's site and decided to stay away from that (the non-VR is very affordable used) even though it's the obvious walkabout lens in Nikon's range. Is it good (enough) after all then?

Toni, the best thing to do with Ken Rockwell's reviews is not bother reading them. He's a lovable clown.
