Best Nikon Wide-Angle?

Having done a fair bit of web research I can imagine almost everyone is going to say the 14-24mm f2.8, however this is not in my budget and I'd actually prefer a prime...

Not opposed to an old manual focus if that's the best image quality...

For primes, the AI-S manual focus lenses are hard to beat.

The 28mm f/2.8 AI-S is superb as is the 20mm f/3.5 AI-S.

If you are after a cheaper wide angle zoom option, the Tamron 17-35 f/2.8 - f/4 Di is excellent.

The Nikon 24, 1.4 is something I'm lusting over, but I can't afford it either.

Tokina 11-16 is well regarded I believe (no experience but been researching recently).

A couple of friends have the Tokina, it is widely said that it is as sharp as a prime, even Ken Rockwell said the same as other reports and reviews..

There is a 14mm F2.8 secondhand on grays of Wstminster at £999! Ouch...

Agreed . Don't be scared of manual focus. It's very easy to get to grips with, especially with a wide angle lens.

I've used it and for a crop it's GREAT!
Not so hot on FF as it ports up to 14 ish mm

Personally, I love my Sigma 10-20mm on a crop, would REALLY love the Tokina 11-16 though.

Seems to me that VFM is the real factor of concern; so what is your budget ... ?

[Edit] I've just re-read my post and it sounds a bit terse; what I meant to infer is 'if VFM is a key factor, we'll need to understand your budget before we can make sensible suggestions ...
