Has any one got any advice for me for shots in my local club. They have asked me to take some shots while they have a band playing. So i can't use my flash but i do want to keep the atmosphere of the night with all the differant colours on stage.

i have a d40 with a kit lens and nikon 55-200 lens
I am not too sure what settings to use but i am starting to get to grips with the manual settings bit by bit.

Thanks for any help Wayne

There are much more experienced peeps in here that will hopefully help you out.

As a fellow d40 owner I know you are going to struggle. But all hope is not lost.
A lot will depend on the venue - light levels, how close you can get and what you want to achieve. I have taken a couple of pics of a band and my keeper rate was not that high really. (I also knew a lot less about my camera at the time only having had it a for a couple of weeks at the time).

personally I got in close with my kit lens, hoping to get the the best apeture i could, f/3.5. I used program mode at the time but now I would use A or M.

If you are planning to stand at the back with your zoom I would not think you would get much of anything.

Close, wide open and push the iso if you have to is my advice. If you have money to spend then get yourself Nikon 35mm f/1.8 (it's on my wishlist) which seems to be great bang for your buck.

I hope other will pipe in and give better and more detailed (and prolly more correct) advice.
There are also a few gig photography threads on here if you search that will give you some pointers.

nice quality pic. I think I should be taking advice from you.....

only thing I would say is watch your backgrounds, the disembodied guitar behind him is odd but can be whipped out afterwards.

I don't think you will have much issues if the lighting is that accommodating.

main thing is to have fun IMO.
