I normally shoot in AV mode, but when taking photos of landscapes or street photography or portraits what settings to you guys tend to use?

Its abit of a vague question iam afraid, but I guess the main thing is that is comes down to experience, which is what iam lacking really.

Also in daylight Iam normally using a 24-105 L ISO 200.

Cheers for any advice :)

It depends what depth of field you need or want. Look at some of the tools on DOFmaster and produce DOF tables for some sample focal lengths (e.g. 30, 50, 85, 105mm).

When I'm wandering around with my camera it is usually on Av, 100iso and F8, auto WB (and partial metering not that it matters). F8 is generally good for anything.

Some landscapes you might want to go to f11 for even more depth of field. People shots look better with out of focus backgrounds so open the lens up to f4. F2 from a 50mm f1.8 can look even better but as the depth of field gets shallower nailing the focus on the eye gets even more important.

None of it is right and wrong. Do what you like best :)

Buy a book called 'Understanding Exposure' by Bryan Peterson. Brilliant book and work several reads!

Im in the same boat, im always swapping from AV to TV to M trying to suss out what i like best :)

I seem to go for M a lot, that way i can use the light meter to adjust the exposure myself.

As Duncan said, read that book, i have it and im just about to read it for the second time, the first time i think i had too many distractions, but now im away working on a vessel in the north sea, ill have days of doing nothing.

av, tv, manual or any other mode.. IMHO its best not to choose a mode dependant on what your shooting.. but upon the light...

changing light I would go for AV and be in control of dof but set right for shutter.. in constant lighting i would use manual and have control over everyhting because the lighting isnt going to mess you about

its not what your shooting.. its the conditions your shooting in..

IMHO :)
