Hi

I am looking to get a good walkabout lens for my D40

I already have the 18-55mm and a Sigma 70-300mm for long range.

But I wanted something a little sharper than the 18-55, would the Nikon 50-200mm do the job?

Or a choice off:

Sigma 18-50mm f3.5-5.6 HSM
Tamron 28-80mm f3.5-5.6
Sigma 55-200mm f4-5.6 DC HSM Lens

or even the

Nikon 18-105mm AF-S DX Nikkor f3.5-5.6 G ED VR Lens

Thanks, Vicky :clap::clap:

I can recommend the Nikon 18-70 DX. Plus it means you'll have some cash left over to get a decent flash ;)

If you want to spend a little more and get something a bit faster, consider the Tamron 17-50 f2.8

to be honest the D40 kit lens is pretty darn sharp IMO
if you want something sharper you'll need to go prime, but then, its not such an easy 'walkabout' lens (will make you work harder for composition though).

you can get the Nikon 35mm f1.8 G AF-S DX Lens for well in your budget and it's one that's taken my interest too.

Thanks for all your suggestions, have alot to think about now :)

Another vote for the Nikon 18-70 kit lens as a general walkabout lens for a DX body. Sharper than the 18-55 (albeit a little larger and heavier) and not too expensive either. If I hadn't needed to include mine with the D200 when I sold it, I would have kept it to use as a walkabout on the D70.

Seconded - the tamron 17-50mm is a fantastic lens.

On the telephoto end you can't go wrong with a nikon 55-200mm to be honest, the general consensus is it's too good and too cheap to consider the alternatives
