Hopefully this is the correct thread - if not could a mod be as so kind to move it to the correct one - many thanks

Set-up is:
Nikon D300s + MB-D10 grip & AH-4 Nikon strap + Sigma 100-300 EX f4 (attached) & carry a Sigma 1.4x TC (just in case - well the miss's does)..

What I would like to know is -Whats the best way to carry this set up?

Most of the time I hold the lot by the lens 90% of the time (:thinking:bit like a baseball bat if you get my meaning) & the rest of the time I hold it via the hand-strap.. I do have the neck strap but its never been attached - hence the hand-strap.

Would there be too much weight on the D300s mount with the Sigma on it hanging from a neck-strap?

Welcoming any comments..

I have seen a neck strap that has a support for the larger lens :thinking:but I dont quite think that I want to walk around looking like I've got a drain-downpipe sticking out of my chest

Just carry it by the lens but wrap the strap round your hand/arm for extra security.

Never lift or carry a camera/lens combo by holding the body when the lens is substantially the heavier item - it will put strain on the mount.

Thanks for that....

 Just out of curiousity - with the weights being 1.3kg for the D300s & 1.5kg for the Sigma (as just been & weighed each of them & look at the weight!!!)

Would that then be ok to lift/carry around via the hand-strap/body?

:eek:I cant get over the weight that I have been logging around when out & about

lol, that's positivly feather weight, my normal camera/lens combo is about 6.5kg

hence it's normally in the bag or attached to the end of a tripod draped over my shoulder

Mmmmmm is that with or without including the tripod  Then again your equipment is prob more along the pro side than my feeble amateur clobber :'(

I carry my Sigma 150-500 with a neck strap attached to the lens collar. It seems a bit heavy to have it dangling from the camera alone.

Apologies - didn't see your post - too busy with my own... I have often wondered about doing that, is that like attached via the tripod thread in the base of the collar?

Reading that again it seems I may have answered it already - but just like to make sure..

it'll be fine, don't sweat it until you've got crazybig glass :) they're well built, these nikons ;)

tripod is probably another 2kg on top of that

If I'm out with the 70-200 f2.8 then I generally just carry it around by the lens, if's not good for your neck using the strap especially if you've far to walk

I did have Sigmas "bigma" and that was on a smaller Nikon D60.. said  to that in order to get Siggies 100-300 EX f4..

 Coming to think about it, after a trip a couple of years ago to the Hawk Conserve down South I remember seeing someone there with what looked like the Hubble telescope attached to what looked like a Canon body... I think that my dinky 100-300 (in comparison) is nothing to worry about

Here's my normal walkabout setup

At the back of the tripod foot on my 150-500 there is a metal rod part of the ring clamp screw, the nylon strap goes round that.

Do you use any clips (or similar) or have you just threaded the neck strap thru?

I use a similar setup for motorsport, I stick a monopod on the lens and carry it over my shoulder.

 £108 delivered!!!

I'm one for just carrying the lens around without a case.... Think I'd rather have the lowepro that the spider comin to think of it....

 Just had thoughts of Hairyduck with that spiderpro

I use an Optech tripod strap to carry the D300/700 with the 300-800 Sigma attached, works fine.

That cotton carrier looks very much along the lines of the spiderpro...

I can see why with the comments about the vid... what are the chances of getting them mixed up, will give a hole new meaning to "shoot" I spose... :naughty:

On my new (to me) 300mm f/4 AF-S I've just spun the tripod mount around so the foot is at the top of the lens, doubles up as a decent size handle to carry it with when its not in my bag. (Wasn't big enough on my old 300 I've now got to sell!) Seen a number of guys with the bigger lenses do it this way too...

Think the best tripod mount for carrying was that one on the Sigma 50-500mm... The one on the 100-300mm f4 is a lot smaller  either that or I have big hands :naughty:

I let the lens hang of the camera mount on both my telezooms, while supporting it with one hand as i walk. a month ago i saw a wildlife tog with just the camera strap throw his canon 1d and 800 f4 lens attatched, over his shoulder as he tackled a latch on a gate

Once I arrive on location I carry the camera and lens attached to a tripod over my shoulder. I find I can do this all day.

However, having just bought the 600mm f4 lens I decided that it also needs a better way of getting to location. So I have just purchased a Lowepro 600 AW II with a couple of extra pouches. Not used in anger yet but may do this weekend.

Regards

Chris

I think that just shows how well built Canons are - if he was using a nikon...

No, not true, Canon and Nikons top end cameras both feel very solid.

Agreed...I could lift that with 1 finger!

Ef 400L f/2.8IS - 5.37Kg
Eos 1D mkIII - 1.34Kg

Total weight - 6.71Kg

With that, I generally have a neck strap on the body, and one on the lens, both over my shoulder!

Otherwise, carried on a monopod held by the lens tripod mount

 Reminds me of the good ole skool days of - my dad's bigger than your dad ;)

Quite a few mentioning the mono/tripod option on this... It's an interesting read reading peoples views on this - as majority of peoples equipment mentioned is on a more pro set up than my feeble set  but still it's interesting to know how peopledo lug/carry around huge lenses...

I'm not all that keen on neck straps & without wanting to carry a mono/tripod around when out & about for the day- it seems the best way for me & my feeble gear :p is to carry it via the lens..

Out & about is like going somewhere for a day out & just take the camera in case something interesting pops up - that what I tell my OH (its really to get some practice in... & to pose - till I see some of you there with your "hubble's")
