Best way to display my Portfolio online

I have my own website - www.alanf.co.uk (just a personal photoblog currently running Pixelpost - I am not a pro or expecting to make money from the site).

I also use Picasa and Flickr for sharing a larger number of photos amongst family, friends and contacts.

For example, if I go out and take 10 pics - 5 normally end up in the bin, 5 on Flickr and 1 or maybe 2 of those also go on alanf.co.uk.

I guess what I am looking for is the best, simplest and most appealing way to display my portfolio/favorite shots on my own site - or the reasons to keep it rather than just using Flickr exclusively

The way Pixelpost works (or maybe just the way I have it setup) is to display 1 photo at a time on the homepage, I wanted more than one photo being displayed when a visitor arrives at the site - maybe another type of photo site would be better?

What do you use?

When you see links in someone's signature on TP or other forums - do you normally head for their Flickr link or their personal site?

What is a better medium for displaying stuff online - photoblog, albums or flickr/picasa type sites?

Well,
I use Pbase for my main photo storage, but wanted somewhere else to store my portfolio or have somewhere to link to from business cards, so I bought a domain name, webspace and made my own website using joomla.

Early days yet, but it should work for me.

Hi Alan

I guess the first question to clarify is the target audience. If this is purley a personal website for sharing photos with friends and family then you will need some sort of gallery for them, but this would usually be on a separate page called "gallery" or "portfolio" or something similar. SimpleViewer is good for creating flash galleries.

For the homepage I actually quite like how the photos are currently displayed. You should always display your best work on the homepage, and it is immediately obvious that there are other photos to view, so I think it works well.

I prefer Picasa to Flickr, as Picasa has a good gallery structure whereas Flickr is more for photo-streaming, and some people find it a bit more difficcult to navigate, especially if it is aimed at family or colleagues who are not accustomed to the layout.

I do prefer to host galleries on my own site, I feel it gives me more control over the display and I can remove them or amend them quite easily. However I think Picasa is a good alternative, its easy to use and has good management of file sizes and security options.

I can highly reccomend Gallery. This software is free and is amazing, I have 3 websites that all use it. It is quite easy to set up but does require you have hosting with a database.

Have a look at it, dont think you can get better
