Hi Everyone, :)

I have always wanted to take up photography as a hobby. So I have jumped in at the deep end and I bought myself a Canon 500D yesterday and I’m overwhelmed by all the tec speak.

Could anyone recommend a good beginners book?

Thanks,

Ed.

Hi Welcome:)

Have a read of "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson.

Thanks, guys!
I have started reading the talkphotography link and its a great help. So I'm off to sort out my ISO's from my shutter speeds!

Excellent! You'll get to grips with it in no time. Just pick a few of the simple things first and go practice those. Don't try learn it all at once or you'll just end up in a big confuddlement of confusion

I've just been looking on Amazon, there's an updated edition due in August. Might mean some bargains to be had on the old edition.

hi and welcome just keep asking and looking around the talk photography forums you will learn loads, I have ! just stick at it :beer::beer:

Get the 500D Magic Lantern guide.

+1 on Understanding Exposure by Peterson for the technical aspects of exposure, and I'd also strongly recommend The Photographer's Eye by Michael Freeman. The Peterson book is very easy to follow.

I bought myself a Photobook from Bernard Hunter Photography when I got my D90. It's a dvd tutorial and it's been a big help! I'm sure they'll have one for the Canon 500D too. The number to call is 0117 966 6066.

For starters, set the iso to 200 and forget about it until you're happy with the basics of taking pictures. Only when you need extra shutter speed to avoid blurred pictures or the light is bad should you consider increasing it. You might want to start off using the various scene modes, or 'P' setting just to get your hand in, then extend to shutter or aperture priority later. A good tripod or monopod will help get you sharp pictures.

Hi guys,

Thanks for all the info and suggestions, they have been a great help.
I have pre ordered “ understanding exposure” assuming the new version may be more relevant to digital photography. Meanwhile its back to the books and tutorials for me. I might even jump in at the deep end and participate in My52. Some of the interpretations of the themes and the quality of photography is simply inspiring.

Thanks once again and I look forward to being an active member of the site.

Go here:

www.shutterbugclub.com

and take the "day One Digital" course (£35).

A VERY good starting point to get you going.

Best wishes
