Black Rapid Straps, worth the money?

They seem pricey for what they are but just work so well. I use the RS-7 and have thought about getting a double strap for weddings, but it can make you look a bit keen, you know what I mean? It just looks imposing like you are out to shoot everything down in anger LOL.

Seriously though, they are very good.

I'm 6ft 8" tall and a tad padded (although not grossly ;)). The RS7 just fitted me but I felt it was a bit high as it had the camera resting at waist height. I bought an extension strap and a couple of the buckle covers and now I have it resting at hip level (so I can put my hand on the grip whilst walking without having my arm bent) and I've another 10" or so further to go if I wanted.

The buckle covers may be expensive, but they do thread through the buckles and mean that there is a secondary safety to stop the buckles unthreading.

As to is it worth it - yup, even for the £90 in total (I think) I paid for it, it is still the best value accessory I own. You really can carry the camera (gripped 5D2 + lens) for miles and be ready to take a picture at an instants notice. Ms arad85 liked mine so much she has a RS-W1 for the 7D ;)
 
Has anyone got a good solution to mount one of these straps on an arca swiss plate?

I like them but all my lenses have arca plates on them!

I carry my 300/2.8 with a arca clamp that fits right on to the lens plate - works a treat and you do not have to mess around taking the plate off.

I also use an Arca Swiss clamb attached to the BR hook. It is a perfect way of using it between all bodies and lenses... assuming you use the AS system of course:)
 
I am in the same position. Was going for the RS-7 but then noticed that they have the sport version. Any big differences?
 
Anybody use the "Q" straps available on e-bay? They seem to be a rip off of the Black Rapid straps, but about a third of the price.

Before changing to BR I used Optech Pro straps, there are knock-off versions of those available too, so I bought one. It failed whilst there was a camera on it and the camera and lens ended up bouncing off the ground.

Is it really work scrimping on something you're asking to hold £3k worth of camera and lens?

I totally agree! I was just wondering if anybody could vouch that they are as good as the originals, I guess not. Just out of interest, do the Black Rapid's carry some sort of warranty against frailure?

Richard,

I use the 1" Kirk clamp from WEX about £39 I think. You can also buy some cheaper on Ebay if you search but they are all a bit wider than 1", around 1.75" and they are about £19.

Personally hanging all that expensive gear on a cheap clamp is not worth it in my opinion.
