Yes
Tried taking shots in dimming light tonight in M mode.Just a black shot the result. Can anyone help? ISO I imagine but don't really know how to change it.

There are three ways to avoid under-exposing - increase aperture, increase shutter time, increase ISO.

Normally, you use aperture and shutter speed but when they hit their limits in terms of what you want to do you need to change the ISO.

So I was probably wrong on all 3 ! Thanks for helping.I just need someone with a 50D to give me a pointer. In M I don't really know what the settings are showing in the LED.
I know I don't need to try in M but it would be good to know. The light was just dim, not dark.

I don't know your camera but you could try reading the manual, they really are very helpful.

Normally though you have 2 dials, one changes aperture and the other shutter speed, there will be a button somewhere with ISO written on it, press that and move one of the dials to change the ISO.

Through the viewfinder there will be a scale which is telling you if you are under or over exposed.

Yes, need to find the ISO button.Thanks.I do check in the manual but I'll look again.
I usually bo under the 0 of thr scale to get better colours..

Its on the top under the LCD, press it and then change the settings with the wheel near the shutter button

All the controls on the top work the same way, first named is changed by the above mentioned wheel and the second named by the large control dial on the back (make sure the lock button is next to what looks like a hockey stick)

Thanks :)
That shows the ISO but not how to alter it, unless I'm looking at something different

All the settings show in the rear and top lcd's on the 50d, use those to set up.

In the middle of the view finder you'll see the lightmeter. Open up the aperture using the rear wheel and adjust the shutter speed so the lightmeter is centred. You'll need to up the iso. I'm surprised you don't know how to do this? The iso button is on the top of the camera by the top LCD. Use the top wheel to increase.
