I took some photos last night of the snow on our road etc and i was pleased i knew how to take one at night time and be able to see what was in the picture. The only problem was the sky didn't look black. It was black but has like a blotchy effect to it and did not look smooth IYKWIM. Any ideas why this is?

If the shot was taken at night and looks blotchy, I'm guessing that it's ISO noise.

Sounds like noise and/or jpeg artifacts to me, but as already mentioned, post an image so we can see.
