Yes
no, not the title of a song by Frank Zappa....

I took some photos recently of the snow and the snow appeared blue. what can I do to stop this in future ?

Sounds like WB.
What camera are you using? A DSLR? If so try switching to 'Cloudy' WB.

Edit: Fabs beat me to it! :)

When shooting snow you need to over expose by a stop to get the snow to look white. Also, as mentioned check your WB wasn't set to something unusual :)

Snow in the shade is blue if there is a blue sky.
If you are in the mountains it is enhanced by near UV light,
easy enough to correct with Photoshop.

The easiest way is to select the colour of the snow that is sunlit and paint ,using colour burn, over the blue parts. it does not change detail or lightness just colour.

im sure we had a good thread on this once before...

It's not really a case of over exposing but of compensating for the meter reading to get a correct exposure.

With lots of snow, the meter gets more light than it would from an average scene and tries to under-expose the scene.

Steve.

Even if you're compensating for the meter being confused, you still have to manuall adjust the exposure so I guess that's what was being said above.

You've got the WB set to tungsten by the sounds of it.

Either that or you've been drinking bleach and needed a slash again.

I prefer the lemon scented stuff, which is yellow. Blue bleach is just too strong for me! ;)

ok thanks. I am new to this photography lark so I am not sure what WB setting i meed. I have an old Minolta Dynax 5D. The WB setting is on what looks like a light bulb. Can't find the instruction book. Like most blokes I don't do instructions !! So what WB setting should I have it on? And if I do adjust the WB setting do I still need to adjust the exposure.

Sorry to appear thick, and I also have only just joined your site so i have not scrolled through the millions of posts to find an article about it. Is there some kind of searc h engine whereby you can search for a particular subject on this site??

Lightbulb = Tungsten so there's your problem. Anything outdoors will come out blue.
