hi there im fairly new to photography and just cant get the propellers to blur on my aircraft shots no matter how i play with shutter speed

Try setting your camera in TV mode or shutter priority, then set your shutter speed to around 1/320th of a second. The small turboprops I shoot have just the right amount of blur. You can go slightly slower to something like 1/250th depending on how much blur you want.

It just takes a little trial and error. :D

if you go to high with shutter speed you will freeze propeller movement,so you need to be reasonably low 1/250, and a good panning technique,
not a good example focus wise, but shows blur,

really play with shutter speed until your happy

The shutter speed needed also depends on the aircraft type... Older (eg WW2) aircraft need slower speeds than more modern aircraft. I had to go to 1/80th with a Lancaster and still didn't get full prop discs, whereas 1/200th for an Extra 300 should get very close to a full disc.

Helicopters are in another league again, especially Chinooks..
