I would never attache the camera via its tripod mount socket to the tripod with any lens larger than a 24-70mm F2.8, always use the zoom lenses tripod collar.

Sorry I didn't make myself clear. I wasn't refering to using a tripod, I meant if you are carrying the camera with heavy lens fitted, is there something that can join the camera to the lens (in addition to the bayonet lens mount on the camera).
 
If you have no collar for your telephoto lens there is always this one

AHH we see, there are straps that screw into the tripod mount underneath the camera, this could also screw into the thread on the tripod collar, thereby supporting the weight via the lens and not the camera.
 
This could attaché to the tripod mount collar on the lens.
 
Not a silly question but you'll find that at least on the Nikon lenses which are likely to cause issues with the mount all have shoulder straps which mount on the lens and prevent the strain being on the body & mount.

Certainly on the 200 f/2, 300 f2.8, 400 f2.8, 500 f/4 and 600 f/4.

You use that strap and not the one you might have attached to the body either removing it completely or just not using it when carrying the kit.

The same applies to Canon brand long primes. I don't know about the Sigma/Tamron variants.

When I'm using the 70-200 I'm less concerned, and tend to shoulder that with the strap attached to the body. I do however also tend to use the tripod collar foot found on the 70-200 and large primes detailed above as my carrying point in my hand again taking the strain off the mount itself.

It's an interesting point Brian - taken to extremes I hang the camera from my 600 and hang my 50 from the camera.
But there must be a point where the stresses/weight equal out requiring two hands to support both, so it's not a silly question at all.

However, I don't have an answer.........

Thanks for your replies. I think only Chris understood what I was trying (ineptly) to say.

Let me put it another way, when I am carrying my camera with 200/400 zoom attached I have my monopod screwed into the lens collar and use the monopod as a pistol grip, so the weight of the lens is not being taken by the camera's lens mount. BUT there is still the weight of the D3 hanging off the lens and given what I read in the thread http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/threads/nikon-nps-have-found-my-d800-body-damaged.534692/ referred to above, I am concerned as to whether the camera's lens mount is strong enough to support the weight of the camera. Therefore if there was a bracket with one end screwed into the lens collar and the other into the base of the camera this would ease the pressure on the camera's lens mount. Would this work and is there such a thing available?

The answer is no - you don't need to find an additional solution on this if your concern is about the effect of the body on the mount.

The body itself without the weight of the lens is able to support itself when attached to a 50mm f/1.8 or a 600 f/4. The design and materials of the body - magnesium on the D4 and "plastic" on the D5100 copes with the weight of the body.

The issue is about the torsion that the lens has on the mount if unsupported and only the body is held - the loading isn't the same if the lens is supported and the body not.

The mount in the referenced thread has likely been damaged either due to an unsupported long lens, or through an impact - even if the OP of that thread is unaware of them.
 
Dont worry if youre using a "pro" series camera which is 100% metal bodied, you should worry if supporting a long lens on a "consumer" plastic body though, my D600 nearly snapped off the 400mm f/2.8 when i turned it from Landscape to portrait orientation, didn't keep that for so long, weak as an old blokes bladder

No need to be concerned. The camera weighs what? 1kg? 1.5kg? That's not much. Plus, all the weight is within a few cm of the mount so there's not much of a turning moment: an unsupported 1.5kg camera isn't as bad as an unsupported 1.5kg lens. All in all, it's nowhere near enough to stress the mount.
