NOOOOOO!!!!!
After all the excitement of getting my 10-20 lens, i am now morbidly upset. I dropped something on my 40D and have cracked the top lcd display, it shows hardly any information on it now. The rest of the camera seems to be working okay.
Should i send it to Canon directly for repair or take it to a local repair centre. Has this happened to anyone, and what should i expect to pay, roughly, for the repair.
Dean:crying:

anything involving screens would cost a fortune :| i wouldnt like to guess how much. its expensive enough to fix simple problems

maybe house insurance if it is to much?

oh no, I feel so sorry for you, I've just got my 40D & am really excited & pleased with it, I can imagine your absolutely mortified. :crying:

NOOOOOO!!!!! Ouch. I feel for you.

Sorry to hear that it's broken. Try insurance people first to see how you get on. It should be repairable. Plenty of posts on whose had a good/bad experience where.

Does your house insurance have an excess?

In Jessops, for the 40D the 3 year accidental cover warranty is £50 ish.
Usually, house insurances run an excess of about £50 per claim.
See what I'm getting at?

Bad luck though mate! That must be stomach wrenching :(

:shake: That's terrible news, I'm gutted for you. As has been mentioned above if you can find out the repair costs and find its going to be a fortune just do it on insurance for your house.

I hope it all works out for you, at least you can still use it in the mean time.

If your house insurance wont cover it remember to get it added on at a later date. I would imagine the cost would be very high to repair, I would contact Fixation first as at least you can speak or e mail them knowing you will get a reply. I have had to have a few repairs on my cameras and I found that Canon were not very helpful unless it was warranty work then they seemed ok with that.

This isn't any use to you now, but I'd recommend having specialist camera insurance to avoid any nasties like this in the future :(

Thanks for all your replies folks(y)
I contacted Norfolk Camera Centre, told them that something was dropped onto the camera, cracking the top lcd display. They said the cost of repair would be around £68, subject to inspection. Im going to ring Colchester camera repairs and Fixation on Monday to see what they say. I dont really want to use the camera in the meanwhile incase it causes more problems. Bummer thing is, i sold the 10D yesterday just hours before it happened:shake:. Looks like ill be using the 350D for the next few weeks.
Thanks
Dean:)

Oouchie.

Shame you bust it but £68 isnt too great a kick in the wotsits. It could be much worse.

Ouch and double OUCH :(
Hopefully the repair will be quick and not too far above the "Quote" (y)

That's sickening! :(

If you ring Fixation, they'll probably be able to give you a fair indication of cost.

£68 sounds very cheap, that's about £58+vat I would have thought the LCD would have cost more than that as a spare part,

I would go with house insurance but you might want to get it covered first under all risks on house insurance as they will probable want it named on the policy

sounds cheap to me as I paid close to £70 for a filter holding ring for a canon lens from fixation not so long ago, if they will do that lcd for £68 I would send it quick!

For £68 I'd just pay up and avoid the house insurance. If you make a claim via your insurance, you'll have an excess to pay anyway (at least £50 I'd have thought), but you'll find your premium increases by a disproportionate amount next year (and probably more than the £68) as a result of this claim. Sadly that seems to be the way of insurers these days.

Cheers

Today i phoned Colchester Camera Repairs as they were on the Canon website as official repairers. The quote was £40 labour, £18 for the lcd then vat and postage. The grand total will be £76.38, thats the finished price. About 1-2 weeks turnaround. Im gonna pay for it myself to avoid losing no claims on my insurance. Hopefully all will go well, and i can put the whole episode behind me, and put it down to experience.
Thanks again for you comments.
Dean:)

Ooooo.. glad its sorted. Similar thing happened to me few days after I bought my 40D!
I almost cried. The LCD protective screen cracked but the images on the screen are fine so a little different to yours I guess.

Rest of the camera seems ok. Made a speculative enquiry at Jessops - "if i were to crack the screen and had your accidental cover..." kind of thing. They said its a 6 week turnaround at that time wth Canon so I decided to try live with it.

So far so good but I may call Colchester cameras myslef as I believe the part I need is less than a tenner and the job is a quickie!
Bet your chuffed its more or less sorted now though!

Happier about the whole ordeal now. I actually burst into tears when i picked the camera up and noticed it, its mad, but its my pride and joy.
Dean:)

Glad to hear you are able to get it sorted for not too much money :) I can only imaging how you must have felt when you saw the broken screen :(

Cheers mate, im suprised you didnt hear the scream up the road in Reading:LOL:
Dean:)

So that's what that noise was  I thought the foxes were out fighting again  Seriously though, I'm glad it's turned out ok Dean (y) I just hope you're not without it for too long when it goes in for repair
