I had a little mess around with a lamp last night, the pics were dark and yellow. Can anyone recommend a cheap light or box just for playing around with at home. For general use, taking pics of objects, portrait etc..

What is it you are actually wanting here.... a light.... or a small box to put products in for lighting and taking shots of......or a softbox to go on your flashgun or what?

Sorry I didnt quite understand as you said products and portraits.

I'm after a light, I think, Just for messing around with, to point at different areas of things and see what kind of effect it produces. Will a softbox be better? or something like a bright lamp with a daylight bulb. Say for instance laying a guitar on the floor in a dark room and only lighting a part of it.
 
Anglepoise - can't beat 'em for a cheap set-up. Does need a tripod though, and if you figure out the WB you don't need an expensive 'white' bulb

Tin-foil can be taped to them as flags or even to create snoots, just gets bl**dy hot though so watch out

How about going to B&Q and buy a work light for £25.
Your colour balance will be fooled and shadows will be harsh...but it could be a cheap lighting solution.

Plenty of practice first me thinks...

I'm looking into doing a few cheap things, just practising with light, and as paul said, any cheap light you can get your hands on will help, white balance can be fixed later. strobist is a good starting point, lots of DIY stuff to keep costs down and imagination high!

Going to b&q on monday to have a look, there is plenty of angelpoise lights on ebay aswell. I'm not too concerned about harsh shadows and getting a perfect image at the moment, just looking to play around and experiment a bit.

This is my current setup, using an old builder's light a friend found in his attic. Far from ideal, but workable. I've got white ceilings, so try and aim the light up as the bounce diffuses the light a fair bit. My next *cheap* step is to get another couple, then sort out proper kit when I have the cash for it :)
