Butterflies & Flash

I read on a Flickr discussion that using flash can permanently blind Butterflies.
There were some arguing against it but a lot agreeing and some even going so far as to say they would never use flash on Butterflies.
Any thoughts on this??

I don't think this is true. There are no signs at Wisley, or Tropical wings or any of the other butterfly houses I've been to that say NO FLASH. I think if this were true, the experts would have put a stop to flash being used.

If you are just using the flash in ETTL mode to fill according to the ambient light, it shouldn't be really much brighter than sunlight anyway (I assume that the butterflys don't look straight into the light!)

Whatabout LED ringlights? Surely they aren't too powerful and are daylight balanced too. Probably better for macro as a bonus.
