Buying 24-105L off eBay... Stolen?

I went there and he's a well genuine bloke so instantly felt at ease. The date code was only one month behind. I cut the seal and it was brand new, even the zoom was a bit stiff. It smelt new too!

Absolutely immaculate as expected -- all wrapped up with the receipt dated 29th April, 2009.

If he does work at a camera shop, I don't see how he'd have gotten away with stealing 2x 24-105L lenses. Jessops would notice, and an independent photography shop would notice a hell of a lot more.

I have a customer who is an independent jeweller. Dishonest staff are his biggest worry - not because he doesn't know it's going on, it's proving who the bad 'un is that's the problem. I suspect that if the employee has been with you more than 6 months or so, you can't sack them without very hard evidence.

Too late now, Krytix, but just think how gutted you'll be a couple of years down the line if you send this lens away to be repaired & the plod turn up at your door. Sure, you have this bloke's address, but even if he hasn't moved house by then, you'll never see the money again if it is nicked.

Yes but any lens on eBay could be stolen. He's letting me go to his house. If it does turn out to be stolen I have all his details and everything, even proof he sold it to me.

If youre going round, he knows you will have money on you, £640. He may have a few mates with him, if you know what I mean.

I know the price seems to go to be true, its probably nicked or they are pulling some sort of scam.

IMHO....keep well clear of this one.

My friends 450D who came with me to collect the lens.

Which is why the end we turned up with nothing and decided once I was happy with it we'd take him to the cashpoint, with the lens, to hand over the cash... But I felt like a knob 'cus it was the most genuine item I've ever bought.

She managed to get it discounted to £750 new from Jacobs, but they would only give store tokens back so they decided to sell it and make some money back to buy a discounted 24-70L instead. In the end I paid £625.

IMHO....keep well clear of this one.

I will be gutted if that happens, but it could happen with anything -- I bought a Xbox 360 the other day off eBay, as well as my PS3 and various electrical devices in my house that could all go wrong and need to go back in for repair. This is the most 'secure' thing I've bought in terms of that NOT happening, and I don't know how you're meant to avoid it unless you skip buying second hand completely? Obviously not many people agree with you as the classifieds on this forum are very busy, and eBay are hardly not doing well...

I didn't mean to cast aspersions, mate. It was difficult wading through the whole thread, and the whole setup did seem a bit more dodgy in the earlier posts. I'm glad it all transpired to be ok - clearly you can tell the score face to face better than we can at one remove.

Its an odd combination for sure.

TBH on a public forum I was be a little careful about suggesting things like this (even with a ?) without any evidence, as you could find it a very expensive mistake if the seller was feeling a bit litiguous...
