Buying a broken lens

If the price was right and I had a good idea as to the repair costs, perhaps.

This is what they have put

Canon Lens EF 200mm 1:1.8 L Ultrasonic

Lens works good but sometimes shows error01 on my camera when photographing dark places. After that need to restart a camera.

Service said power diaphragm needs to be replaced so I have it now and is also for sale for £100. I can not guarantee that this part cause the problem. Apart of that everything works perfect on my camera.

You best not take the risk, let me know where this is advertised and I'll check it for you :-)

I bought a really tatty but optically perfect Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 MKI a while back that didn't work correctly for £50 when I was thinking of moving to Canon. As it was I didn't make the move and so it sat in the cupboard for well over a year. Anyway, couple of months ago I bought a cheap 50D so sent it to Sigma to be repaired .. cost me £120 and they basically rebuilt it with a new focus motor and other bits.

£170 all in and it works like a charm now ... :)

That's the good thing about sigmas service tariffs. I had new internals for my 120-300 shipped from hk fitted and tested for 150 ish.

Don't do it.

The 200mm f/1.8 L is a wonderful lens but you'll struggle to find anyone to repair it. Parts aren't easily available, and some repairers will refuse to touch it just in case they accidentally cause some damage (because that damage might not be repairable, even if the original fault was).

I used to have a 200mm f/1.8 L and I sold it simply because I was concerned about these issues. If anything ever went wrong with it, I'd have been stuffed.

In theory this should work wide open even if the aperture was shot.

The lens is discontinoued and spares are hard to come by. Maybe it shares an identical part with another lens, in which case it may be possible to do something about it. At that price definitely NO.
