5 yr Warranty you might be surprised

So.. I was searching for something else when I saw a Canon 1dx mkii for sale at Cex for £700 with a 5 year warranty. FIVE? So I first looked at the small print and it clearly states "consumables not covered". Next step google AI that a camera is NOT a consumable. I then searched "shutter" and that comes back that it could be considered a consumable
I then email CeX and asked.. I gave them a good clear out by mentioning these parts have a life expectancy... here is what I wrote..

I listed the camera detail ref number etc
I wanted to know what was covered by warranty. Shutter, Mirror box etc all the insides of the camera are they Guaranteed for 5 yrs as with all cameras they do have an eventual lifespan ? Many Thanks and I look forward to your response :)

Not expecting a reply I was delighted to recieve this within 24 hrs

Hi Anthony,

Thank you for contacting CeX and for your email and your question regarding the warranty.
I’m happy to confirm that the entire camera is covered under the 5-year warranty, including internal components such as the shutter, mirror box, and other essential parts.

I hope this helps and if there is anything else I can assist you with, please let me know and I will be happy to help.

Well! I was interested enough to go into the shop (a few miles away) The camera looked good enough but when I checked it has over 1 and a half million shutter actuations.. haha I nearly threw it to the floor... Mine arn't that bad and mine are shot at haha

They had another one at another shop and on investigation that had less than half a million.. Thinking about the 5 yr warranty on shutter as well it still had my interest.. However on furthur conversation with the manager... If anything goes wrong they will either offer you like for like or your money back.... thats a shame as it juts seems a bit of a waste of time . Had they sent it to be fixed under warranty .. new shutter and mirror box etc it would be worth it.. But nagh I gave up

Anyways... The reason I am posting.. If you find a camera with a decent shutter and your ooing and haaing... it's all covered :)

I did buy a cheap four thirds lens from them a year or so back , but the main reason was that it had a expensive mmf3 four thirds to MFT adapter attached which they hadn’t priced in the deal . So there are bargains to be found basically due to there lack of product knowledge

So if you buy a camera for £700 from them and in 4 years time it becomes unfixable and they cannot get you a like for like will you still get £700 back or a pro rata rate ???
Oh and it will be a voucher and not cash.

Guy in shop told be refund or like for like

I just bought a used cfast2 memory card with 5 yrs guarantee from them :)

Thanks for the heads up will check out our local CeX , I wouldn’t have considered them but for a 5 year warranty on second hand stuff thats good
Just checked that is for most used electronic equipment

How do they manage to give a five-year warranty on second hand equipment? I wore out a Zenit E in 2 years.

But then I also have a lot of second hand equipment which are still fine many years later. I guess they rely on us being honest, and also forgetting, losing receipts. Hey, how can you give a 5-year warranty on a secondhand Canon EFS 18-55 lens, mine failed a day after the 1-year Canon Warranty, to be fair it had very heavy use.

Then they say after 6 months to 5 years a voucher for current value, who is doing the valuation. It's a 6-month warranty, after that you are at their mercy.

If the price of the camera is a good deal, and then happens to go wrong, sounds like you will have a had a camera that cost nothing for that time, as you get your money back. And if nothing goes wrong, you will have had a good deal in the first place. And if you do get your money back, getting another replacement will probably be cheaper at that point. If you could find such an old item then. ;)

It does seem that it is not a wise move from them, but they have obviously crunched the numbers and it works for them.

It works for them because if you buy a camera for say £800 and it fails after 3 years they will either provide a replacement or a voucher to the current market value which by that stage might only be a few hundred pounds, if that. They have a very different valuation system compared to a used camera retailer. For example they will sell you a camera for £800 but pay give only £300 if you are selling to them for a voucher to be used in-store and only £200 if you want cash for the same camera.

Personally having seen how they treat equipment in-store it wouldn’t be somewhere so would personally want to shop in.

That one made me laugh Tommy , because a couple of years ago a lens in one of there shops caught my eye on passing by , when I asked to look at it in store I turned out that someone had stuck the price label to the lens glass , I kid you not ..
But on the other hand there lack of knowledge helps I once bought a cheap Olympus lens four thirds lens circa £30 because they hadnt realised the mmf-3 converter on it was worth £200 at the time . There loss LOL

I hope they don't change the small print after your investigation :)

I've bought a couple of cameras from them over the years, a Sony A6400 Grade B which was near mint, shutter count of a less than 500 with box, it probably wasn't Grade A because the box had missing inserts and was for a camera and lens combo. I sold that camera and bought a Fujifilm X-S10 also Grade B, less than 1000 shutter count, with box (again for a lens combo). I've also bought a few lens from them, the only issue I had was once getting an old Sigma that was meant to be Sony E-mount but was A-mount.

So I'm overall happy with them but there is a lot of luck involved. These were both ordered online so I knew I could return within 30 days by post on instore. What has made it worth it for me is I had some vouchers, and managed to buy some more at a discount, bringing the total cost down. I've never had to test the warranty with cameras, I did for a cpu once, and they refunded me without hassle, as it was within a few months.

I've used them a lot for computer gear, there i've had more issues with condition. Sometimes B can be near-mint., but sometimes it is rough, so it is the luck of the draw. I've also sold to them quite a bit, mostly computer stuff, and I've found them very inconsistent with grading. My local store is also prone to refusing items because of some random issue, that leaves me puzzled at times, I've then sent the item to them via online and they accept it no questions - I can only assume that they didn't want to stock that item at that price. It has also happened the other way round too.

I did try to sell a Canon SX50 to them that wasn't in great shape (cheap eBay purchase) - I self-declared it as a grade C. The local store said there was an auto focus issue so they could not take it. My wife has a nice condition SX50, and compared the two and they worked exactly the same with auto focus. So, I sent it online and they said there is a crack in the bottom near tripod mount (there was) so they can't take it. In the end I sent it to WeX as heavily used and they bought it and even upgraded the condition which surprised me.

One difference I noticed selling to WEX and other specialists like them or MPB, LCE, etc, is that they drop the price down heavily if you don't include certain accessories, or if batteries/chargers are third party. When i tried to sell my SX50, it had third party battery and charger, CeX don't care about that unless you are trying to sell as Grade A, whereas WeX dropped the price down a lot, so much that it made sense for me to acquire a genuine charger and swap the battery from our good SX50.

Also when buying online the specialists have listings for individual cameras and lenses, so, you can see what you are buying even if you aren't local. With CeX while you can see which stores have stock of each grade, you don't know the individual condition of each one, what accessories are included, etc. When you place an order it randomly assigns one to you.
