Camera Dilema..

Do you need 3 bodies - more to the point do you need 3 cropped bodies.

Lenses aside I (and it's just my view) would go for 2 bodies - a 7D and 5DII

:agree:

A 5DMKII and a 7D would be a potent combination!

You'll probably need to factor FF lenses into the equation as well though.

OK, I have just added a 7D to my two 50D one is griped.
Now do I just sale one of the 50D's or do I sell both and get a 5D MKII....
that is the question?... Think I know what but not 100% sure

Sorry your 50D is griped. Obviously upset by the new interloper :D

Being an obsessive gadget lover can be an agonising business. I take medication, usually in the form of buying something else I don't need. It doesn't help for long though, does it?

Here's a plan - sell the lot and get a 1D4.

as I said to sale two 50D and get a 5D MKII or just sale a 50D so I will not have three body's..

not interested in one body only I like two body one with say the 70-200L IS 2.8 and one with a short zoom for now that's the EFS 17-55 IS 2.8

Well that is the question I guess I see you have both crop and ff how do you find you get on with both and how much do you use both?

I LOVE the 5DII and have to force myself to use the 7D!! The 5DII is definately the camera I pick up first, even for long wildlife stuff. I am constantly blown away by the FF, unlike the 7D, which to be honest I can take or leave.

Having said that, I used the 7D the other day for dragonflies in flight and I have to say, I was impressed by the AF and the pictures it turned out. I'm not sure that 5DII would have coped with the focus speed like the 7D did.

My 5DII is sick at the moment, the LCD has died, so as a result the 7D is getting sole use. Perhaps I will grow to love it!!

In my opinion, definately ditch the 2 croppers and get a 5DII - It's a beautiful camera.

My immediate question is whether you truely want to go full frame?

Trying to be more helpful this time, that's a really good question from Sara.

I think mixing formats is very difficult, and you've got quite an investment in crop format lenses currently. It messes up all your focal lengths.

If you could just use the 7D for long lens stuff and action, which is the only thing it does better than a 5D2, then you might be okay with a couple of lens changes, eg 17-40L and 24-105L/24-70L, but otherwise there will be a lot of overlaps and possible duplication. On the other hand, how often do you use the long end of the 100-400L? If it's not that often, on a 5D2 maybe that could effectively replace the 70-200 on a cropper, if you see what I mean.

Not the same thing for sure, but the range would be similar and you could just crop your way out of it when you run out of reach. It's those sort of difficult decisions and compromises that you have to sort out. Not easy.

Be aware that once you see the IQ from a 5D2, you'll want to use it for everything. That's what happened to me ;)

Edit: crossed post with Sara - you deserve better luck with your cameras! I'm constantly amazed by my 5D2

I do have the 100-400 at max often for wildlife, and I do not see that ever being as good as the 70-200 IS L 2.8.....
as for wide zoom I think it will have to be the 17-40L shame it only f/4 on the 5D MKII

think teh focus is down to this
Auto Focus TTL-CT-SIR with 19-point CMOS sensor TTL-SIR-CT, 9 focus points

How often do you use your UWA? I was in the same boat as you - I had the 7D for the long reach stuff, the 5DII for everything else, except UWA, where I kept my 10-22 EF-S. Talk about the 7D doing both extremes!!

Personally, I never really turned into a fan of UWA, so eventually moved on the UWA and just use the 24-70 for walkaround on the 5DII if needed. I haven't found a need for anything more than 24mm on FF yet.

Another question then - You have the 100-400 and the 70-200. Why keep the 100-400 when there is such a crossover with the 70-200? I was also in this position and moved on the 100-400 for a 300mm prime and 1.4 TC - Never been happier. Of course if you shift your other EF-s lenses then you can really have some fun reorganising your camera bag!!

Well that's exactly right. That's the dilemma. Swap it for the MkII with an extender? Endless choices. BTW, f/4 on a full frame is similar to f/2.8 on a cropper, in terms of depth of field and you've got at least a stop more high ISO on full frame to bridge the gap.

And so it goes on. Full frame and crop format are fundmentally different; we never had this problem with medium-format film and 35mm, if only becuase the damn lenses weren't interchangeable!

I think Sara's got it right. Use full frame, because the IQ is better. Then swap to the 7D for long stuff, because a 600L 4 is just not a practical plan.

as you will see I have both x1.4 and x2 extenders and do use the x2 on the 100-400 so the 70-200 will not replace it. And yes I do use UWA I got the Sigma 10-20mm which I love and know its no good on the 5D MKII but as 10mm is 16mm eq on the FF the 17mm is nr.
