I want to take my 7D and 24-70L on holiday, can anyone recommend a good insurer? Will need instant cover if preferable (or within a day or two)

I want to insure against loss, theft and accidental damage. I've been meaning to get insurance for my kit for ages so this is as good a time as any.

This means it will be cover for home mainly and this one trip abroad. Don't want to pay too much for it ofc :p

Would I need to register every single piece of kit with them too?

Cheers.
Yes I know there are a million and one other threads like this, and I know I have my other thread asking about taking my camera abroad....call this a one off admin-prerogative :p

Hi Marcel

I've looked into buying seperate insurance, but by far the cheapest option was to add my kit to my house insurance.

Initially I added £7k of unspecified personal effects, but then I had to specify two items when I upgraded to 1-series cameras as the replacement cost was over their item limit.

I'm with direct line.

Cheers Phil :)

I forgot to say, the house insurance isn't an option unfortunately.

Hmm - Photoguard, Towergate and AUA spring to mind then.

Thanks chaps.

Well after saying house insurance was not an option (because we didn't have any).....I've decided to buy some and go down that route, with morethan.
Includes extra accidental damage cover and contents away from the house cover (including abroad too).
Don't have to list items below 1500 either.

:eek::eek::eek:

You like to live on the adventurous side of life, don't you??!!! :D

Did you check specifically that your gear would be covered? I remember that once or twice we had to specify the bikes (for example) on the policy.

Our cameras are covered separately now, but as OH sorted that and I've never heard of the company I won't vouch for it here!

Have a great holiday, BTW! use the time to write a tutorial about the pros and cons of taking a DSLR + kit away with you and whether or not insurance is 'worth it'!!! ;)

I'd rather use the time to drink beer, get fat, get tanned and take the kids swimming :D

I did check. Indian call centre too, but as soon as I mentioned that I take my camera out, he mentioned individual lens, body, accessories etc. All covered as single items.

Good - just check the wording of the policy. Carefully. Slowly. With caution. ;)

You're spot on there! Just want to be covered while we're away really....and when I'm out shooting.

As for house insurance, there's usually someone in the house, and we're all always very careful (Can't think of any time in the past god knows how many years where we would have claimed, had we had insurance).

As we're away a few times this year we took out annual travel insurance at the start of the year. I made sure it covered my photography kit separately and had to pay extra. Maximum on one item was £500, which possibly doesn't cover the cost of a wife's ring etc, so always worth checking.

It also now appears that we;ll be lucky if any trips are cancelled due to volcanic ash as we'll be covered because we took the policy out before it all happened. One of my collegues at work was told last week he wasn't covered because it was a known risk!
