Camera insurance

I have neglected to buy my camera from Jessops and purchase a camera from a retailer that offered it £40 cheaper for the body only. Anyway, this means I can't purchase Photo+ because I didn't buy the product from Jessops so I'm wondering whether Domestic & General allow people to start insurance policies up with them on their own or is there any other insurance companies that you would recommend going with? I want peace of mind but should I even look at getting insurance?

Hi

I'm also considering getting insurance for my equipment, since building up my gear I've now realised I've got thousands of £££'s worth of kit that could be easily stolen/lost/damaged.

Are there any companies that people could recommend? and what sort of premiums are we looking at?

I did call D&G about this before and yes you can but it is a significant difference in the cost.

Michael.

What about Photoguard insurance services? The initial quote was £30.00 for the year in the sidebar. Would love to hear customer's experiences with these companies.

Edit: Being a Jessops employee and their kind relationship with D&G, do you think that they would offer a reduced premium for the year?

I tried getting a quote from Photoguard on the website, I put in £3000 of equipment, and got quoted £200 for the year! Bit pricey........is this a normal figure for a year?

I'm only insuring around £500 worth of equipment at the minute but I like the idea that I could insure my camera and other bits and bobs in one insurance policy. With Photo+, you only insurance the camera and pay extra for the lenses that you buy. Photoguard covers everything right?

I believe it includes everything yeah........I put in a value of £3000 to cover all my equipment. If UK only, its £118, which isn't too bad I suppose but if you want Worldwide cover if you travel about, then its oevr £200.....not sure if its worth it tbh.

£118 to cover £3000 with no excess? That's a great price. If I had that much equipment then I would definitely go for that. If not the annual cover, I would include the monthly plan.

Annual insurance for up to £800 worth of kit is £35. D&G is more than that for just the camera so Photoguard looks the option, just need some opinions on it.

Why this burning desire to be covered by Jessop's Photo+ or D&G??? There are plenty of other perfectly decent companies out there. I use AUA Insurance, who have no horrible surprises in their small print, and I pay just under £90 p.a. for £3,000 worth of kit including 30 days world wide cover. They're also cool about not charging any admin fees when I have to update my policy due to adding more equipment and upping the value covered.

Thanks Nifkin, I'll take a look at that one. Sounds good.

I just got a quote on the website for AUA, and got quoted £70 for the year, to insure up to £3000 and includes 30 day worldwide cover. That is really good! I will probably just go with them.

That looks great aswell. I think the obsession with D&G comes with working at Jessops and having one insurance plan with them before but I knew it was a good choice to not go with them again. I will either go with AUA or Photoguard, much better.

I just got a quote of £26.35 for up to £1000 worth of equipment from AUA, that's the one :)

Yeah.........seems almost too good to be true! I just hope they are easy to deal with if *touch wood* we do ever need to claim.

I have my equipment insured separately with my Halifax Rewards account for £12.50 per month... I got £50 for setting the account up in the first place and on top of that get £5 per month for having a £1k+ monthly wage.... so just pay the £7.50, my iphone is also covered. The limit is £750 for EACH item :)

Sounds pricey now I've just had a glance at Photoguard! duh!

And a limit of £750 per item aint great once you start getting into L lenses

Peach, how do you get them onto cover? I've got Halifax rewards account also but didn't realise could get photo gear insured ??

Do I just call them and add the items?

Out of curiosity, which one did you go for lauy because I'm about to an online application for AUA now.

I just rang Halifax regarding the Ultimate Reward account cover.......I think Peach has been misled or is slightly confused with the cover. The cover they offer is Purchase Protection, which means within 90 days of purchasing an item (including cameras), then you can claim for it if it is damaged/lost/stolen. They said they don't provide ongoing cover for photography gear like these companies we are mentioning.

I actually just renewed my Home Insurance, and added on Personal Belongings which provides up to £2500 worldwide cover for any items including photo gear, so I just went for that instead. Otherwise I would have gone for AUA as they were by far the cheapest.

the thing is has anybody tried and tested the insurance yet no point taking the least expensive ones if they have loads of flaws in it.

Michael.

I agree. Taking out insurance on the basis of who's the cheapest is not a very good idea. AUA provide good value, but I have seen cheaper; I went with them because their terms and conditions seemed pretty spot on to me, and I'd heard good things about them. Also, the policy that Aaduki provides is underwritten by AUA too, and that gets recommended on here all the time.

Hey ... yeah I understand it's just basic cover as long as you have used your card to purchase the item. I'll have to check about the ongoing thing... I'm sure it's as long as you have the account for and pay the premiums.

I didn't buy my iPhone with the card, they insure them anyway... (Think they had competition with Natwest at the time so just did it)

I took out insurance with D&G with my previous camera, whilst moving house it was damaged.

I emailed D&G who put my intouch with a repairs company... I then had to ring them to arrange shipping quoting my claim reference number.
The repairs co then mailed me out RMSD stickers and labels to send it out.

They have a policy thats its returned within 10 days... which it was.
All in all very happy with the service.... very fast and no questions asked.

I've got something similar through my bank account; it's basically an extended warranty/accidental damage cover; don't have to have used my debit card etc to have purchased the item for it to work, just have to register the item with them. It's not the same as insurance though.

Why does it differ from regular insurance?
Isn't it like having like house contents insurance?

Because it's an extended warranty service, not insurance; it won't cover you for loss, just manufacturing faults and accidental damage over and above the manufacturer's warranty.

Ah I see... thanks for that!

Loss/theft... is probably the main reason for taking out insurance in the first place.

i found my contents policy was the best way to insure my equipment and wasnt as pricey as i expected.
allways ask if they can do anything on the price there is normaly some room to negotiate they have.

For reference, I just rung D&G this morning and they offered me a price of £59 for one year on just my camera. :gag:

AUA = 1 year for £26 for upto £1000 worth of kit. Doesn't take a genious to work that out :) and I'm happy with the review I've read from customers.
