Hello all I am new here so I apologise if I am repeating things.
I recently purchased a canon 15-85mm lens to go on my 500d body. And was thinking of getting the equipment ensured. I have had a look at a few insurance companies online. I was however slightly put off when some of them ask for personal details in order to give a quote over a none secure web page (normal http rarther than https).

This left me looking at photogaurds insurance that uses a https connection whenever private information is added. However i have looked at some forums online and these are not the cheapest. I live in the uk but am going to America for two weeks at the turn of next month so it would be good to have insurance for then too.
I do not make money from my photographs I just peruse it as a hobby.

Any suggestions please ?

Cheers ed

Check your home contents insurance - the better companies have a realistic single item limit and allow you to take gear out of the country for limited periods. If you're still with parents as a resident you should still be covered.

If you have, or are planning to take, a massive collection with you then consider a specialist:thumbs:

My home contents insurance covers for £1500 worth of equipment you take outside your house for £80 a year...Sounds reasonable to me when I travel with laptop, camera and a couple of lenses, flash etc...The piece of mind it gives you is really nice :)

So as previously said if you have contents insurance it sounds reasonable to just add your camera on that.

quite a few people are with Aaduki as myself. I'm covered for £6000 worth of equipment for just over £10 per month....no extra charge for overseas cover
Never had to claim though yet.
They need details of any 2nd hand equipment + any item over £1000

I'd definitely check with your home insurance first as most policies will cover things out of the house altohuhg you may need to specify them depending on the limits set by the insurer.

Thanks for the replies. I decided to go with photogaurd. I will be going to uni next year so I would need a cover for when im at uni. It turned out at £65 a year so I paid it as a one off payment. Thats cover in the eu and 30 days worldwide.

Cheers all

Hi,

I started looking into this and Photguard appear to exclude being burgled!

What is Not Covered...
5. Theft when the Property Insured is Unattended
6. Theft from an Unoccupied Insured Location

I have emailed to get clarification as it seems theres little point to being insured if it only covers being physically robbed or dropping it in the sea!

Anyway, for those that extend their home insurance can you suggest a good one as my home insurance renewal is coming up and I'd like good cover for my kit which is getting pretty expensive (even if a fair bit of it is second hand)

Ta

I did mine that covers all your gear anywhere in the world for £40 also covers accidental damage.
I'll dig out the website if you want

Cheers, quite a large excess again though (£150 minimum).

Thanks though.

I think I need to change my insurance. I am with photoguard and I have 16k insured with them, and have overseas, public liability and personal injury cover with no excess and like for like replacement.

That is costing me £50 per month which feels like quite a lot.

Anyone else got similar cover and pays less? if so who with?

When I upgraded to my 7D and 15-85mm I decided to check my home contents insurance policy which is with directline.

Got the away from home cover up'd to £5000 (a little overkill but rather be safe than sorry) with a single item limit or £2500 and it put my premium up by less than £10 per month.

The only drawback would be if I wanted to use my gear "professionally" as it wouldn't be covered.

I didn't realise some house insurance policies would cover taking your equipment abroad, cheers for that information, I'll be checking that out with mine!

www.eandl.co.uk

Had a mate use them too

Hope it helps:thumbs:

Isn't E&L the one who basically will only insure kit kept in cars if there is a metal bulkhead between the inside of the car and where the gear is kept? (IE the boot) - therefore pretty much ruling out any estate/hatch and most new(ish) saloons?
Or was that photoguard?

If I remember correctly it's E&L as I think I looked at their T&Cs and realised they were no good for me as I have an estate :cuckoo:

if I remember Photoguard need to be informed if taking camera gear abroad and may charge a little more for that period of time.

I'm with Aaduki for 12K of cover, £250 excess, 2 million public liability, 75K professional indemnity with 60 days worldwide cover. Cost me £380 for the year.

One of the companies I looked at were underwritten by Aviva so I wouldn't touch them with a bargepole after previous experiences.

Yeah that's them. A shower of ***t. :shake:
You're covered if you've got a MKII Jag though. But not a new Range Rover. Barking mad. :cuckoo:

Cheers Russ - what is there excess like, I don't want to go and drop a lens only to find out that due to the excess there is no point in claiming (like most insurance)

I wa with adukai for twelve months , and after about six months I decided to read the small print ... what I found with my cover is they have one statement which went something like `you must at all times take proper care when using your equipment` which is a very ambiguous statement and an obvious get out clause.

Kev.

thats them - and a shower of .... is putting it nicely

other highlights of their cover are that their quoted monthly charge is actually based on lunar months so you pay 13 times a year

and also their loss adjusters are tight as a gnats... and try every loop hole possible to get out of or reduce a claim

and when i cancelled the policy they kept on taking money via the DD until I physically cancelled it with the bank - and then they sent me a rude letter (and it took a threat of small claims court to get the overtaken money back)

these days I have £5k of cover anywhere in the uk (including theft and accidental damage - and theft from an unattendedvehicle so long as put out of sight) on my house contents at no extra charge (direct line) - proffesional use isnt covered , but if i shoot weddings I usually get a one day liability insurance and gear cover from zurich (£25 IIRC) and add it onto my fee. If I shot a lot this wouldn't be economic but for very occasional use it works great

I think I set my excesses really low and there's no excess on Accidental Damage but again that's something you can choose.

I had E&L and they were great and also really easy to cancel when we changed home insurance cover and no longer needed the policy. Mine seemed to cover non-saloon cars so long as the boot area was obscured by the manufacturers luggage cover / parcel shelf. However, home insurance won't cover a 500mm so readily. Worth going back to E&L for a single lens or any other suggestions from the floor?

did you have a claim in the time that you were with E&L ? If you had done I would guarantee that they wouldnt have paid on stuff in the boot of a non saloon.

my house insurance covers a single item to 2.5k and they've confirmed in writing that they'd consider a lens to be seperate to a camera in assessing a single item value - I could also add higher value single items or extend the total cover at a relatively small charge (smaller than taking seperate insurance)

If i did need seperate cover i'd probably go to a broker and ask tem to work out a specific deal.

Never touch e&l.. for ANY insurance. Had pet insurance with them and they got out of paying nearly everything through little loop holes.

Quite a few people seem to recommend adukai but has anyone needed to claim on them?

I used photoguard when I took it out for a year. Reasonable price but the main thing that made me go with them is that you don't have to pay excess. I only just started in the world of photography when I took the cover out, so as said above, there would've been no point in getting insurance with an excess of £150 or higher when only one piece of kit (body) is worth more.

Atm I'm not on any cover because I don't think it's worth it for me. I'm very careful with my equipment plus I don't use it as much as I'd like so the £40/50 odd for the insurance I might as well save and spend on equipment. And as my equipment (atm; hoping to upgrade) isn't worth that much, a few years without insurance and I could buy the body/lens again with the money saved.

Obviously, people with a lot of expensive gear or professional 'togs or people who shoot in places where damage/theft is more likely to happen then insurance would be a no-brainer.
