In recent weeks I have noticed that 2 Tp forum members have sadly had camera gear stolen. I cannot start to imagine how these people feel. Hopefully the culprits will be caught and brought to justice quickly. Up until recently I was pretty ignorant to the value of camera gear, however after buying some decent gear I fully appreciate the financial loss that people my face. Stupidly I am probably in the minority who does not have there gear insured. This will change in the next 24 hours !!!!!!!

Which are the best companies out there, is there any type of cover to look for, or avoid.

I'm with photoguard, they paid out without a fuss and paid the service centre directly when I had repairs done to a dropped lens.

Both me and the wife have insurance with Photoguard. They aren't the cheapest I found, that was Aaduki IIRC, but they do give me the best features in my policy. I've got about £10K insured for around £350 a year, covering travel, unattended car theft and more but no excess to pay for any claim. It's very easy to add or remove items on the website too.

I've moved to CLIIK, can't comment on claims as I haven't had to make one but the package and price is extremely competitive - it appears from their site that they only insure pros but they do insure amateurs and you get the benefit of pro 'extras'.

Well, I have been one of those victims mentioned above and same as the OP I was ignoring the possibility to be a victim (big fail).
Now, I am looking for an insurance as well for the little gear I was able to save which I had with me on that day.
Would a content insurance do or should it be a specific insurance for photographers?
I read a previous thread about those insurances, but maybe with time, policies changed?

Many use a contents policy but for me I prefer to have a dedicated insurance ... if I have to claim it won't affect my household policy and I don't find I'm suddenly restricted by values of equipment, excess etc.

If you bought your equipment used, do you count it as the price you paid or the original new price as total value of equipment?

I insure mine under household insurance, some items mentioned specifically and adds about £80 extra per year with cover up to £7500 for any single item, items under £1500 do not need to be specified. This includes accidental damage and theft from an unattended car.

Personally I couldn't pay £350 a year specifically for insurance when after 5 years of no claims you would have saved £1350, enough to cover any excess or increase in premiums.

I too insure mine under household contents. Pay ~£100 which is just under £5k worth (includes high end tablet), no item over £1k. That's rented accomodation though which massively increases premiums. Includes accidental damage and is worldwide. Looked at other options online but cost was about double.

I recently looked at insurance just before my holiday and decided in the end to add them to my house insurance,as it was a lot cheaper.
Im insured for acidental damage, loss or theft. This covers at home out and about and on holiday.
The excess is only £50 and I'm insured up to £10,000 I think it is.Anything under £1500 doesn't have to be specified. So have just specified my d800 ,70-200 and macbook pro as single items which did put it up slightly more but its only an extra £14 per month (£160 a year).

For the over 50's SAGA. I just renewed today £50,000 of cover £2500 per single item. One big lens declared at £3000 +. 1 Year premium £70.10p.

That's good to know. I've mostly heard good things about them - now if only I could get them to talk to me :)

Sounds like a very good deal. I've only got a 'few' more years to wait :)

Thanks for all the input. As a result i have contacted my building/contents insurance and have found out i am covered upto 15k at home, 7.5 k away from home. All i need to do now is spend a few grand to get my monies worth.lol

I got a quote from photoguard and it was c.£150 for £4000 cover whereas my home insurance with Legal and General was £60 for the same cover.

If I was a pro or had a lot more gear then yes, a separate policy but the above made financial sense to me
