Camera noob, problem with my photographs

Hi there.

My friend just bought himself a Sigma SD10 and when he eventually managed how to take a photograph there was purple and green lines throughout the picture. Does anyone know whats causing this, and how its fixed? I'll upload a picture and show you.

800px along the longest side is the limit

not sure about what could be causing the issue. maybe a problem with the sensor?
 
Erm, well I'm no expert but the image sensor looks pretty knackered to me
 
The camera seems to have a lack of not being broken.
