camera shops out of D700's

Went and saw my local camera guy (Adelaide, Australia) today and they sold their last D700 a few days ago, they have one more D3s in stock and they reckon it could be as late as next year before they get more. They are right out of Canon pro bodies and most of the pro Canon lenses have gone too.

I rang around town and everyone is saying they are almost impossible to get hold of. Some people are saying they might get something in a few weeks, but it seems no one is really sure. I checked the US store I buy gear from and they are out of stock on a lot of gear too.

I'm kicking myself because I was going to pick up a D700 as a backup and was holding off because I thought the D4 might come out soon. Of course prices for all this gear starting climbing after the events in Japan.

I was wondering if the shelves are getting empty over the pond?

If you happen to have some gear that you were thinking of selling, I would say wait a few weeks and you might even sell it for more than you paid for it.
 
There's the obvious shortage at the moment due to the situation in Japan, that's going to take a while to sort itself out. The D700 though has been low in stock for a while, which made me think the replacement was somewhere on the horizon. I was looking to add a FF to my 7D at the end of the year, or if the D700 replacement is out, perhaps make a move to Nikon... Prices have also crept up for those places where you can find stock.
 
Here, in the land of perforated cheese, all the online places are showing little or no stock of any nikon pro gear. The specialist bricks and mortar places still have stock of the D3s and the holy trinity, but I haven't seen a D700 for quite a while - naturally at the high street stores you'll pay 10-20% more, but any port in a storm.

I'm of the opinion that the problem lies with the Sendai plant which produces a lot of the nikon pro stuff - Sendai was hit by the tsunami. I too was looking to go full frame, but was hesitant at buying gear that was nearing the end of it's life cycle. I ended up buying a D7000 as it had features that would make my life a lot easier. I'm not worried, I can wait a bit for a new FX model, especially under the circumstances.
 
Try DigitalRev in Hong Kong. I got a Canon 70-300L from them a couple of days ago.
 
Production stopped on the D700 some time ago...

I waited before taking the plunge 3 weeks ago and i picked up a beauty with only 380 actuations for £1300 and almost 2 years warranty, some silly sods are paying over 2K on Ebay and theres still a couple for sale over 2K on there. Any new ones left tend to be the grey market ones.
 
There's stock out there, just obviously not with the cheapest retailers as their's will be the first to go.

I'd have probably continued to guess that the replacement is coming very soon, but for the fact that the earthquake has set them back a fair bit.
