Camera upgrade your views

Looking to upgrade my Nikon d70s, I am in my first year of university and am studying photography, at uni they use canon 5d mark ii's. I am open to suggestions for either Canon or Nikon, because I currently use Nikon I have a few nikkor lenses but only 1 I would keep so it's not like I have a load of glass tying me to Nikon, I have a budget of £2000 and would like a nice body and one lens looking for a lens around 24-70 but that would only leave me with £1000 for a body any suggestions for bodies or lenses would be appreciated p.s what do you think dx or fx thanks in advance.

depends on what you want to take pictures of, however given a 2k budget, you'll find more good glass if you stick to a decent dx body (saving money) and invest more in the glass. I'd imagine you could get (lightly used) a D300, 17-55, and another lens of high quality for whatever specialty you wanted (either a 70-200, 300f4, 105 macro, 85 1.4D) and still be under your 2k budget. Depending what you wanted, you could get the 17-55, a Sigma 70-200, plus an 85 1.8d or 300f4 AF for 2k.

I would definitely get a D700 if possible - I started off with a just a D700 and a 50mm prime and it worked great! Since then I have purchased 2 more primes, a 35/2 and a 28/2.8 which cost just over £200 each. If you really want a zoom then it gets a lot more expensive but then I simply do not like zooms very much

Thanks very much for both your replies, I would love a d700 but I feel that it might be better to get a d300 used or d7000 and spend more on the glass as suggested the 17-55 would work well and in response to what I am shooting well right now I am very much into portraits but outside of London when I am not at uni I tend to do landscape work which is one reason why I might have to strongly consider a fx body the 5d mark ii seems reasonable right now with a 24-105 kit for just over 2k would prefer to sick to Nikon but seems more expensive for what I want

Stick with the D70s and its insane flash sync speeds, it'll give you more creative options for your course. If you're wondering what I'm talking about, read this.
