Hi guys, i love nature photography, and love photographing birds.
but often when walking in my grans wood, they fly away before i am any where near, no matter how low i get or slow or quiet I am, I have been looking on the net at small tent hide type things, and they are quite expensive, i was thinking if i could put up a large disjointed circle, or a line along the edge of camouflage sheets and cut holes in it at different points to stick the camera through, I would tie them to trees, put maybe a couple of different feeders amongst the trees, and then go there the next morning early, and sit and wait, and take photos of more illusive birds like bullfinches, wood peckers, and who knows what else, that I know are there but won't go in tot he garden!
So first of does this sound like a good idea? and second, where can i get some cheap camouflage sheets? well they don't have to be proper camo stuff with bumpy bits and al sorts, just something what will blend in! and i supose they can be any material, i don'y need them to be water proof and wont be up permanently.

thanks for any help!!

I have some camo material about 12x5 I just drape that over myself and sit quietly. Patience is the thing. Putting out some food can usually entice them around.

surplus stores army navy, excellent place to browse for some camo gear, mine cost £14

Thanks you two, i am probably over complicating things with the whole circle thing, i tend to do that lol, but i think just a sheet over me, or just one sheet tied to trees would work, but i think a little bird feeding station would be good investment with a nice large sheet of camo for me to experiment with.

i,ve got a friend who bird watches and he just uses one of those pop up tents in camoflage, thats what i,m going to get. can pick them up cheap enough.

Yep, those cheap tents for fishermen would work - maybe drape some scrim-net over it all if you're really paranoid...

And then explain to the Cops why you're in a camouflaged hide with a load of photographic equipment - never mind taking photos of public buildings in a built-up area...lol

Have a look at some of our stuff......

However, if you are on a really tight budget, the advice offered above is sound enough. If you can get some cheap camo stuff from the surplus shops you could manage ok with that.Patience is the main thing for wildlife stuff.

Thanks Fracster, i have just been looking at your sight, some good stuff, i reckon I could mod something out of a couple of the scrim nets and a bird feeder or two, i think it'll be something for me to do in the Xmas hols.

If you can stretch to one of the small hides I would do.Photographing wildlife is so much more enjoyable if your not sat out in the rain.....:D

But you could sort a reasonable hide set up with the scrim nets....

i use as said before a piece of camo netting from surplus stores, i can sit in my on a chair draped over me within six feet of my feeders, or i put sit in my shed with the netting draped over door way within four feet of feeders

its probally about the easiest and cheapest method (if you are on tight budget) there is and no reason why sitting in woods with it wont work either, but as already mentioned patience is the thing

Yeh thanks, i know patience is the the key, i just want to make something easy and simple to give me a better chance :)
So wish would work better, me with the sheet over me sat in a chair, or a sheet tied across the trees making a screen, with me in a chair behind it?

You behind the sheet, in my opinion.

Yeh that's what i was thinking, plus then i can keep it up there pretty much permanently, so it won't be new to them once they get used to it

I would say your spot on with that, the birds will get used to it being there pretty quickly. Take a chair with you and get wrapped up well.Best of luck and post the results up......

i agree if possible tie off and sit behind less chance of movement showing.
you can either cut holes for lens or as i do take some clothes pegs lift it drape over and use the pegs to hold it wrapped around the tripod legs for camo if you are going to be using a tripod

Found my local surplus and according to the online shop they sell a 9ftX5ft camo net for £7.95! It may just be high enough for me to make a small over hang to cover me depending on the height of my chair.
