Camping Gas Lanterns, a problem ...

My dads given us a CampingGaz Gas Lantern.

Now, I remember it having a gause around the gas outlet, which I presumed made it burn bright white as gas lanterns do.

So off I went to the camping shop and found said gauses. They're called "mantles"

Put one on the gas lamp, turned the gas on and put a match to it.

I then watched as the kitchen filled up with smoke and the "mantle" I had just put on, was reduced to a small pile of smouldering ash.

What did I do wrong ?

wrong kind of mantle? fitted it badly?

I had the wrong type of mantle fitted. I didn't realise you had to burn it before use though, I was very young the last time I remember using these (or rather my dad using them)
