Hi All, I have an iPhone 3G which i use way more than my 8Mp HP digital camera for the simple reason that it's conveniently always with me and it's almost always charged.

As my contract is up soon i'm wondering:thinking: whether it's worth looking at a phone that tries harder to be a good camera, and if so what to go for??

In an ideal world it would also synch my calendar, contacts and Email with exchange like the iphone currently does.

you could always wait for the new iphone which should be out soona and its rumoured to have a much better camera, alternatively look at the dell streak which also houses photo editing and upload to web capabilities.

To give you an idea of how "good" the sensor in a phone is, here is an illustration of the various different camera sensor sizes...

The "full frame" one is what a film camera or something like a Nikon D3 has, the APS-C the D300 that aberal has and the 1/2.5" one, that's your HP camera.

The sensor in the iphone is even smaller......

Depends what you need a "general" camera for. I use my iPhone camera all the time when I'm out and don't have a real camera with me - purely because I have it with me anyway.

I got quite a nice little Fuji point n' shoot jobby about 18 months ago, and hardly ever use it. I always forget to take it out with me. :)

They reckon the best camera is the one you have with you when you need one. If you take your phone everywhere in preference to your camera, then that's the best one to have.

Will it produce the best images, obviously not, but even a lower quality image is better than no image at all.

Nothin' like starting the morning off with a bit of bumblebee porn :D

I always considered camera phones crap, but I must say I am quite impressed with the wife's HTC desire. Think it's 5mp and either has or is soon getting HD recording.

Took some videos at Cosford and they turned out a lot better than I thought. I'll try and get some photos put up from the phone :)

Here's an example from my old Nokia N85, I dont think its too bad....

Probably better than I can do with my D700 to be fair, given my lens choice. Just goes to show you need the right tool for the job, something general purpose will beat something totally unfit for purpose...

My Xperia X10 camera is excellent. No kidding, took a shot and printed it off A4 and its tack sharp, no compression etc.
