Thanks Ed, I'll start looking there.Canon had something like that on the EOS600, but the pin configuration might have been different. It's a long time since I had that camera.
Looks much too big for an N3 to me - especially the plug surround.I think it might be a Canon N3 connection for shutter release on the EOS 10D, 20D, 30D, 40D, 50D, 5D, 5Dmk2, 5Dmk3, 5Dmk4, 5DS, 6D, 7D, 7Dmk2 and all types of the 1D.
More research required.
